The push for African environmental data tools amid storm and oil spill risks

experts in South Africa, Madagascar and Mauritius say early-warning tools are needed to manage oil spills, typhoons and coastal flood risks off Africa’s eastern and southern coasts, and they are ready to build them. South Africa plans to lead the effort through , building on a nearly decade-long pan-African project that used satellite data to support fisheries, aquaculture, ship traffic monitoring, sea rescue and coral bleaching monitoring in the Western Indian Ocean.

Watch: and the University of Nairobi are turning skin cells from African donors into stem cell lines for global medical research – the goal is that future medicines work better for Africa's unique and diverse genetic profiles. As part of the CSIR-hosted African Cell Initiative™, the skin cells will first be converted into stem cells and then into nearly any type of cell required for early testing of therapies to treat a range of diseases.

The CSIR brings pluripotent stem cell and cell line generation expertise to this partnership, while the University of Nairobi brings extensive clinical trial experience and East African skin cell donor networks.

This project is funded by the South African Medical Research Council, in partnership with the UK Research and Innovation Medical Research Council, carried out through a multi-institutional collaboration spanning Africa and the United Kingdom.

We are laser-focused on affordable HIV diagnostics for Africa, using signal-booster nanoparticles and technology

In 2026, and Cairo University began developing an innovative -based sensor designed to quickly, affordably and efficiently detect and quantify , without the need for prolonged and expensive laboratory processes. The project builds on pan-African laser and science supported by the CSIR for more than 20 years: experienced CSIR biophotonics researchers and Cairo University's National Institute of Laser Enhanced Science are confident they can develop an optical biosensor to detect the precise chemical fingerprint of viral targets.
