The recent tailings facility failure at Samancor’s Dikwena Chrome mine near Brits is a sobering reminder for the mining industry. This raises the question every TSF owner should be asking: do we actually have the technology to see what’s happening inside our dam walls, in real time, before it becomes a disaster?
The answer is yes.
With Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) and Distributed Strain & Temperature Sensing (DSTS), a single fiber optic cable becomes a dense array of sensors — continuously measuring strain, temperature, and acoustic activity along its entire length. This makes it possible to detect seepage, micro-seismic events, and slope deformation as they develop, not after the fact.
To put the scale into perspective — a single 10km cable, sampled every 0.25m with 2m spatial resolution, delivering 0.1°C temperature resolution,2µε strain resolution and a 0-1250Hz acoustic sample rate, gives you:

Let’s Talk About DAS as a Perimeter Intrusion Detection System (PIDS)

What can it do?

✅ Real-time monitoring over long distances — up to 100km per device
✅ Instant alerts for activity near the perimeter
✅ Low Nuisance Alarm Rate (NAR) – typically under 10%, depending on cable positioning, fiber quality, and installation. The system improves over time as it learns its environment.
✅ Passive sensing – immune to Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) and Radio Frequency Interference (RFI). Lightning strikes do not affect the buried fiber optic sensor cable.
✅ Cable theft or damage? No problem. The cable has no black-market value, is essentially a glass tube, and can be easily spliced (repaired).
✅ In case of a fiber break, the system continues to monitor up to the break point.
✅ Detects human activity within 5m, vehicles within 10m, and digging activity up to 20m from the cable.
✅ Works as a standalone system or integrates easily with existing security platforms like CCTV, VMS, PSIM, SCADA, or C2 systems.
