Earthworld Architects & Interiors in the making of meaningful things… with our world becoming more and more global - virtual and less defined, a need to define “Heimat” has become great.

House Alto: Nestled in the mountain amphitheater of the Groot Winterhoek Mountain Peak in Tulbagh, is the Alto Bioreserve.

Alto house pays homage to the site, hovering above the site on 6 concrete piers, allowing the natural site to continue under the building. A sustainable building is passively designed to welcome the winter sun and exclude the summer heat gain.

The farm uses solar power although provision has been made for the installation of a hydroelectric generator and turbine. The interior of the house is wonderfully light with stone floors and large glass window systems to enjoy the sun and the spectacular views.

Work Pod: A compact, independent office to support their professional work, designed as a playful and imaginative space.
The design was developed in detail and modeled in 3D. The Components were manufactured using CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines, enabling precision and speed.
A complete plywood structural system was used, allowing for efficient prefabrication and clean assembly.
90% of the building was fabricated off-site in the factory. This allowed for a short on-site construction period, minimizing disruption to the clients’ daily life. The entire project was completed within 8 weeks from the moment we went on site.

The BLOCKS project embodies Earthworld’s vision and mission over the past 27 years. It introduces an innovative methodology for constructing schools, housing, and shops, fostering sustainable and adaptable infrastructure. By utilising eco-friendly materials such as timber and the Blocks system, the project maintains a straightforward yet impactful approach.

The BLOCKS project is a key part of Earthworld’s broader narrative, which champions systemic thinking, sustainability, social regeneration, and the circular economy. This initiative showcases the principles of self-assembly, empowering communities to become self-reliant.

We are proud to announce that the BLOCKS project was shortlisted in the Buildner Architecture Competitions' annual international competition, Edition #2, "Modular Home." This competition tasked participants with designing modular homes that can be constructed in any form, in any location, highlighting versatile and efficient building practices.

Thank you to the dedicated project team, André Eksteen, Eben Wagner, and Magdalena Cilliers.

The Thai Embassy Refurbishment was an exciting project, with the overall approach to create a sleek, modern working environment while highlighting the building’s existing heritage features. Revitalizing old spaces is always a worthwhile and rewarding experience.

Well done to our Project Architect Emma Hurst for the success of the project!

The Thai Embassy Courtyard is a beautiful example of the possibilities of plywood, and of creating meaningful spaces. The design consists of four plywood columns that are finger-jointed and further accommodate four plywood 'arms.' These arms support plywood disks with a Thai-inspired pattern, CNC-cut. The printed pattern consists of cut-out shapes and gold paint.

The timber structure is encased in an aluminium structure above, with polycarbonate roof sheeting and cladding. This provides the courtyard with permanent covering, yet allows light to filter into the courtyard and adjacent spaces.

Apart from the aluminium windows and the mechanical, electrical and electronic equipment, no manufacturing was done outside a 20km radius from site.

Elements were all kept to a scale which can be handled by a human-hand. Steel elements were designed within specific weight & size restrictions to allow elements to be carried by labourers.

Future Africa Innovation Campus, Dining Hall (the Hub), University of Pretoria.

The Hub is a space where the whole campus can congregate, eat, and share ideas. Constructed out of a complete plywood portal system, which was designed in Earthworld’s office, and then sent to Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines for cutting and manufacturing off site in components, with the added benefit of rapid on-site assembly.
