You may have wondered where your ancestors,
your forebears came from? Where they were thousands of years ago? Do you ever wonder if you will, in old age, develop a receding hairline and/or baldness? And that “one last drink” you take – what does that say about your likelihood to develop alcohol dependency? We have some answers. Personal stories shared in the warmth of the living room, or around a fire, tell about the facts that we all come from somewhere - we carry little pieces of information from that far- away time within us. Our ancestry, etched deep within ourselves - in every single cell, bits of DNA in our bodies carry the story. Today we can take a look back far in time, trace our beginnings, by aid of genomics - the very DNA in our cells. Genes, in the most fundamental sense, define who we are. These are single pages in the book that carries the codes for the human being that you are. Bonosi Genomics, a division of Inqaba Biotechnical Industries (Pty) Ltd., now offers the Ancestry and Personal Facts Test (APFT). Where other competing companies offer DNA ancestry testing for clients interested in learning more about their ancient family tree and origins, our service offers our clients something extra: An Ancestry component, as well as a Personal Genomics component. What this means is that in addition to determining your genetic ancestry, our test offers you a look at some interesting personal characteristics that your DNA can tell about you. All we need is a quick sample collected by means of an oral swab to tell you more about your origins and your genetic make-up. In the Ancestry component of the APFT, we analyse specific regions in your DNA to determine where your ancestors came from, many thousands of years back in time.
-Our test offers you a unique glimpse into your deep ancestral heritage.
-We map ethnic and geographic background of paternal and maternal lines, their locations in historic times and how they migrated throughout the world.
-We can help to confirm family history and traditions and to provide a greater sense of identity.

*Only males can test their paternal lines because only males inherit the Y chromosome. If you are female and wish to find out about your father's lineage then a male relative (brother, father, uncle etc.) can be tested instead.

+++
Your ancestry DNA results are only the beginning…. Learning more about yourself and the building blocks which make you who you are is of great value – so that you will be able to make better lifestyle choices. In the Personal Facts component of the test we examine several markers in your DNA that may be of interest to you, which are relevant for certain lifestyle characteristics that we in today’s society should be aware of…

-We will determine your Blood Group (whether type A, B, AB or O). We also indicate whether you are Rhesus factor positive or negative, which is important to know for donating blood or for blood transfusions

-The test will indicate whether you are a fast or slow caffeine metabolizer

-Achromatopsia (also known as red/green colour blindness) is a non-progressive and hereditary visual disorder which is characterized by decreased vision, light sensitivity, and the absence of colour vision. Carriers of the affected gene(s) can manifest this at varying degrees. The test will determine whether you are a normal unaffected individual/carrier and whether you are at a low or high risk for the development of the disorder

-We look at the genes which indicate whether you are at risk for developing a receding hairline and/or baldness

-We look at the genes that dictate your tendency to have “that second drink,” and if you are at risk for developing alcohol dependency, as well as if you are likely to be associated with a reduced or increased drinking preference

-We can also tell how well you metabolise lactose, and if you are lactose persistent, meaning you are likely to be able to digest milk and dairy products; or if you are lactose intolerant and should avoid consuming dairy products

-Lastly, we will be able to tell you what earwax type you have, which is associated with what body odour type you have; this is more of a curious, fun and interesting association that we investigate

All this information is hidden in the depths of your DNA. You only have to give us your saliva sample (cheek swab) and we will uncover the answers. The cost per test is R1000 for males (who get info on their maternal, paternal lines as well as info on fun personal facts). For females, who do not get info about their paternal ancestry, the cost of testing their personal genomic facts as well as maternal line is R800. To submit a sample or for more information, please contact us via email at [email protected], or [email protected]. Alternatively contact us telephonically (+2712 343 5829). We do drop off test kits in the greater Gauteng province of South Africa. If you are requesting a kit from outside Gauteng, SA, courier charges will be added to the test pricing.

Dear customers all around sub-Saharan Africa,

As many of the countries in sub-Saharan Africa are under lockdown because of the COVID-19 pandemic. As an essential service provider, we would like to assure you that we will remain open as we are involved in the provision of COVID-19 testing equipment and reagents.

As the supply chain from our suppliers are affected due to heavily reduced air traffic and unprecedented surge for demand in diagnostics tools for the coronavirus, we are making the following appeal to our research customers.

Please get in touch with us if:

• You have any qPCR instruments in your lab that you could lend out for a couple of months to labs that intend to do COVID-19 testing or to increase capacity to do so. The solution that we offer from Seegene is validated for this instrument (http://www.seegene.com/covid19_detection).

• You have a significant stock of kits for manual or automated RNA isolation, but you don’t have immediate need for it.
We sincerely appreciate your participation in this initiative.

More COVID-19 testing sites ultimately means quicker containment of its spread.

Also note, whilst the next few weeks are likely to see reduced activity in our usual volume of service provision requests, we are committed to maintaining the best turnaround times possible during this period. This relates to all inqaba biotec™

Candida auris, a multiple drug resistant yeast, affects individuals with compromised immune systems. It has spread across the globe affecting hospitals from Venezuela to Spain, to India and South Africa. It has closed down an ICU in a prestigious British medical center and its spread in the US has resulted in the CDC adding the microbe to the list of disease-causing agents as an “urgent threat.”

Magobo et al 2014, Candida auris–Associated Candidemia, South Africa. Emerging infectious diseases.

At Inqaba Biotechnical Industries Pty Ltd, the identification of a drug-resistant microbe is made possible through our ID services. Should you be interested in performing this work in your laboratory contact us for a quotation on the culturing medium you require, DNA extraction kits, enzymes and more.

The rise of Candida auris embodies a serious and growing public health threat: drug-resistant germs.
