TBT: Necsa recently hosted the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) EduTA mission at the Necsa Learning Academy. The visit provided an opportunity to demonstrate our capability to deliver radiation protection training to both local and international participants, and to showcase our facilities, programmes, and practical training strengths across the mining, industrial, medical, and nuclear sectors.

This engagement highlighted Necsa’s role in skills development and capacity building, while opening the door for future collaboration and international recognition of our training programmes.

Necsa Group CEO Loyiso Tyabashe, and Thabo Molekoa, Chairman & Managing Director, Southern and Eastern Africa Siemens Energy signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the sidelines of the Africa Energy Forum, marking a key step in strengthening collaboration on energy, innovation, and technology advancement.

The partnership between Necsa and Siemens Energy will focus on power generation, including emerging technologies such as Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), as well as skills development, advanced manufacturing, and general industry as well as implementation of National Industrial Participation Programmes (NIPP) emanating from infrastructural projects developed by both organisations.

Speaking at the Africa Energy Forum during the panel discussion, Spotlight on South Africa – Investments, Partnerships and Opportunities, Necsa Group CEO, Loyiso Tyabashe, highlighted the significant role nuclear technology can play in accelerating Africa's industrialisation.

He highlighted that Africa’s uranium resources could position the continent as a leading global supplier, while nuclear programmes can boost local manufacturing, skills development, and economic growth. Beyond energy, nuclear technologies also add value in healthcare, agriculture, and industry, supporting sustainable development.

Closing a successful AFCONE training programme on Uplifting Nuclear Safeguards in Africa!

Delivered in partnership with AFCONE, the Department of Electricity and Energy, Necsa, and supported by STUK, the programme strengthened expertise in safeguards management and regulatory compliance.

The week concluded with a certificate ceremony led by H.E. Ambassador Pekka Metso, Ambassador Kgaugelo Mogashoa (DIRCO), Acting ES Collins Omondi, and Necsa representatives Qhamkile Boyede and Sithembile Mbuyisa.

Congratulations to all participants advancing nuclear safeguards across Africa.

Necsa welcomed delegates for a specialised training programme on Uplifting Nuclear Safeguard in Africa with expert support by Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority of Finland (STUK). The training is hosted by the African Commission on Nuclear Energy (AFCONE), in partnership with the Government of South Africa through the Department of Electricity and Energy and Necsa.

The week-long visit program will focus on enhancing participants’ technical knowledge and practical skills in safeguards management, including regulatory compliance, accounting for nuclear materials, and reporting systems. As part of the training the delegates will have an opportunity of visiting the SAFARI-1 to provide hands-on exposure to nuclear infrastructure and safeguard practices.

Necsa is hosting four scientists from JINR (Joint Institute for Nuclear Research - Russia) and IThemba LABS (Cape Town) to establish perturbed angular correlation (PAC) spectroscopy, a capability available at only at a few centres worldwide, including JINR and CERN.

This project stems from the South Africa–JINR collaboration and will enable research into the “after-effect” which is related to Conversion and Auger electron emission and influences the stability of Radiopharmaceuticals. Auger emitters show promising applications in Nuclear Medicine and the access to radioisotopes from SAFARI-1 will further enhance this research.

The project also highlights strong local partnership, with iThemba LABS providing key equipment, demonstrating the impact of collaboration between South African state entities.

TBT: During the recent Enlit Africa 2026, Necsa GE for Power and Industry, Sengiphile Simelane spoke to ESI Africa on the vital role of small modular reactors (SMRs) in shaping Africa’s energy future and how Necsa is planning to play a key role in this area.

As the continent’s energy demand continues to grow, SMR technology offers a pathway to reliable, secure, and sustainable power generation, supporting long-term infrastructure development and economic growth.
