Necsa scooped four awards at the North West 2025/26 AGSA Clean Audit Awards, held on Monday 12 October 2026 in Rustenburg.

Closing a successful International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Advanced Regional Training Course on Radioisotopes Production held at Necsa, since Monday 05 October 2026.

It’s been a fruitful week with technical presentations, expert discussions, practical learning opportunities and a visit to the SAFARI-1 reactor and NTP Radioisotopes.

Necsa’s hosting of this IAEA regional training course reflects the organisation’s commitment to developing nuclear skills and capabilities, promoting the peaceful use of nuclear technology, and contributing to regional cooperation in the nuclear sector.

Minister of Electricity and Energy, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, met with the Necsa Board of Directors and Executive Committee for the organisation’s Annual General Meeting. The engagement follows the tabling of Necsa’s Integrated Annual Report before the Portfolio Committee on Electricity and Energy on 2 October 2026, showcasing progress made through its five-year turnaround strategy and setting out a prudent growth agenda for the next five years.

Necsa is proud to host the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)Advanced Regional Training Course on Radioisotope Production which officially kicked-off this morning and will end on Friday, 9 October 2026.

The course brings together delegates and experts from across the region to enhance knowledge, share best practices, and strengthen skills in radioisotope production for applications in healthcare, industry, and research.

We welcome all participants and look forward to a week of learning, collaboration, and innovation.

South Africa and Brazil met this morning at the 70th International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference in Vienna, Austria to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation.

On the sidelines of the 70th International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference South Africa, led by the Department of Electricity and Energy, hosted a high-level dialogue on "The Road to Africa Nuclear Business Platform 2027", bringing together African nuclear leaders, policymakers, industry experts and international partners to advance collaboration and unlock opportunities across the continent’s growing nuclear sector.

Addressing delegates, Zizamele Smodeni Mbambo, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Electricity and Energy, highlighted South Africa’s significant progress in its nuclear energy programme, including the implementation of the Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) 2025, which positions nuclear energy as a key component of the country’s future energy mix while creating a pathway for new nuclear generation capacity, industrial development and localisation.

"South Africa has also taken significant strides in advanced technologies. Following the Cabinet's decision to revive the Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (PBMR) Programme, Necsa has initiated an Expression of Interest process to engage domestic and international partners in Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) and Generation IV technologies," he stated.

On the sidelines of the 70th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Necsa is participating in several strategic bilateral engagements aimed at advancing nuclear science, technology and innovation.

Discussions with the Namibian delegation focused on progress regarding the intergovernmental agreement, future areas of collaboration, and a planned visit to the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station.

Necsa also met with the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) to explore collaboration with South Africa's science and technology community, aimed at building national research capabilities. Institutes involved include National Research Foundation, IThemba LABS, CSIR, and Department of Science,Technology and Innovation SA.
