Cape Town’s recent heatwave has once again placed the spotlight on water security. Many South Africans still remember the anxiety surrounding Cape Town’s near-Day Zero crisis in 2018. While the city successfully avoided Day Zero, the experience highlighted just how vulnerable communities can be when extreme weather places pressure on water resources.

Today, rising temperatures, shifting weather patterns, and increasing climate uncertainty remind us that water security cannot be taken for granted.

As engineers, planners, and infrastructure partners, we have a responsibility to design for a future where climate variability becomes the norm rather than the exception.

Because the question is not whether another climate-related water challenge will arise. The question is whether we will be ready when it does.

From Water Shedding To Water Security

For years, turning on a tap in Kimberley and surrounding communities came with uncertainty.

Today, that uncertainty is steadily giving way to confidence.
Through one of the largest municipal infrastructure projects undertaken in the Northern Cape, Sol Plaatje Municipality is tackling decades of infrastructure decline through a R2.5 billion National Treasury Budget Facility for Infrastructure programme.

Sol Plaatje Municipality recently confirmed that 98% of the Emergency Phase has been completed, with residents already experiencing significantly fewer water interruptions, fewer pipe bursts, the virtual elimination of routine water shutdowns, improved treatment performance and greater stability in bulk water supply network.

Bigen is privileged to serve as programme management and engineering partner on this transformational journey.
