Spitfire Restoration Project - Friends of the SAAF Museum Welcome to the Friends of The SAAF Museum's Spitfire Restoration Project. Welcome to the Spitfire Restoration Project.

Spitfire 5518 arrived in South Africa in 1947 and served in the Cape and at Waterkloof Air Force Base before being decommissioned. She then served as a gate guard at Waterkloof for a number of years. In the early 1990s the South African Air Force Museum motivated the restoration of an iconic Spitfire to flying condition to serve as the star attraction at Air Force Air Shows to promote the Air Forc

e and aviation amongst the youth. 5518 took to the skies in 1994 as 5553 "The Spirit of Reutech". Unfortunately she crashed at an air show at Zwartkop in 2000 and was consigned to a container. Ian Grace and Col Tony Smit (a former Officer Commanding and intimately involved with the first restoration), over the past few years, started lobbying for Spitfire 5518 to be rebuilt. After a number of presentations to the Museum Council, the go ahead was given to the Pretoria Branch of the Friends of the South African Air Force Museum to manage the project on behalf of the South African Air Force Museum in October 2014. πŸŽ‰ Our new hangar is finally taking shape, and seeing the structure rise from an empty patch of ground to a home worthy of a South African Spitfire has been incredible.

The brick and cement work on the new hangar is now complete. 🧱
Project Lead Ian Grace and the rest of the team extend their heartfelt thanks to everyone who contributed to this achievement:
- Dawid Laas and Wesbrix for donating bricks
- Hannes Smith for the cement donation
- Ian Forbes and Africa Tanks for supplying the tanks for construction
- Riaan Lottering and Mojave Construction
- Hansie and Johan Nel from Phambili Construction
- Brian and Neil Jaffe with Tania van Zyl from Valhalla General Dealers for their continued support.

With the walls and structure now in place, attention will turn to the doors, interior and fittings. If you'd like to contribute to the project, visit our website for more details: https://spitfire-restoration.co.za/

🌺 Remembrance Day

Today we honour the bravery and sacrifice of those who served in times of war and peace. Their courage and selflessness shaped the freedoms we enjoy today.

The Supermarine Spitfire stands as a symbol of that spirit, a tribute to the men and women who gave their all.

πŸ•ŠοΈ Lest we forget.
