This week was an interesting one. A new client with 12 panels on his roof complained of low performance.

We plugged the variables into special design software we use and figured he should be getting around 40% more energy from his expensive investment. He paid over R4000 per panel in the height of loadshedding!

We went looking for answers and soon found the problem - all 12 panels were connected, in one string, to one of the two inverter solar ports (MPPT's).

All inverters have DC input ratings. In this case the minimum voltage before the MPPT "wakes up" is 125V. The maximum voltage before blowing something is 500V. The optimum voltage is 380V.

What this "installer" had done was, by connecting all 12 panels to one MPPT, exceeded the 380V limit. Anything over 380V, up to 500V, was clipped by the inverter protecting itself.

The sad reality is that 5 panels x R4k each...were just sitting there, doing nothing...
