Eni’s acquisition of a deepwater exploration license offshore The Gambia marks another significant vote of confidence in one of Africa’s most promising frontier basins. As exploration activity accelerates across the region, the move underscores growing industry interest in unlocking new resources and expanding West Africa’s role in the global energy landscape.

With international operators continuing to target underexplored deepwater acreage, the race to secure the basin’s next major discovery is gaining pace. The latest development highlights both the geological potential of and the increasing competitiveness of the wider Basin as an exploration destination.

Africa’s downstream sector is entering a new era.

The development of a second refinery unit represents more than additional refining capacity—it signals a structural shift in how African fuel markets are supplied, traded and financed. By expanding regional refining capabilities, can reduce its dependence on imported petroleum products, strengthen energy security and retain greater value across the energy value chain.

As refining capacity grows, the continent is positioned to reshape fuel trade flows, improve supply reliability and support long-term industrial development. Projects of this scale demonstrate the critical role infrastructure investment plays in building a more self-sufficient and resilient African energy market.

What can the rest of Africa learn from Angola’s energy transformation?

From bold regulatory reforms and investor-friendly policies to renewed upstream activity and a growing natural gas sector, has demonstrated how strategic leadership can revitalise an energy industry and drive long-term economic growth. The country’s approach offers a compelling blueprint for African nations seeking to maximise the value of their natural resources while advancing energy security and industrialisation.

As highlighted in NJ Ayuk’s latest book, ’s journey underscores the importance of creating an enabling environment for investment, supporting domestic energy development and pursuing an Africa-focused energy transition that prioritises economic realities and energy access.

ValueChain Reports | Dangote’s $20 Billion Energy Vision Earns Continental Recognition

The decision by the African Energy Chamber to name Aliko Dangote as the “African Energy Person of the Year 2026” is more than a ceremonial recognition. It reflects a major shift in Africa’s energy landscape, one increasingly driven by indigenous capital, local refining capacity and African-led industrialisation.

At the centre of Dangote’s recognition is the 650,000 barrels-per-day Dangote Refinery, widely regarded as Africa’s largest single-train refinery project. The facility, located in , , represents one of the most ambitious industrial investments ever undertaken by a private African businessman.

For years, , despite being ’s biggest oil producer, depended heavily on imported petroleum products because of dysfunctional state-owned refineries. The contradiction became symbolic of ’s broader resource paradox: producing crude oil while importing refined fuel at enormous cost. The Dangote Refinery has begun to challenge that cycle.

Sonangol’s rise as a more competitive and focused energy company did not happen by accident — it was the result of bold reforms and institutional restructuring.

Angola has transformed its energy sector by separating regulatory responsibilities from Sonangol’s commercial operations, establishing the National Agency for Petroleum, Gas and Biofuels (ANPG Angola), streamlining governance and creating a more transparent, investor-friendly operating environment. These reforms enabled Sonangol to focus on its core business, strengthen operational performance and enhance its competitiveness in a rapidly evolving energy market.

The story reflects many of the themes explored in NJ Ayuk’s new book, Crude Oil: Power, Turnaround and Transformation in Angola, which examines how leadership, regulatory reform and institutional discipline helped reshape into one of Africa’s most resilient and attractive energy markets.

As Africa seeks to unlock investment and drive energy-led growth, Angola’s experience offers a powerful blueprint for how strategic reform can transform a national oil company and strengthen an entire sector.

What if Africa stopped waiting for permission to develop?

In this thought-provoking article we argue that Africa’s energy story is not primarily about transition — it’s about development. With the continent contributing only a small share of global emissions while still facing widespread energy poverty, the article makes the case that African nations should determine their own energy future and leverage their oil and gas resources to drive industrialization, economic growth and energy security.

The piece challenges conventional narratives around the global energy transition and raises important questions about fairness, financing and Africa’s right to chart its own path.
