Why is monitoring becoming one of the most important parts of a modern solar system?
That was the focus of the next discussion during our SolarConnect panel, The Future of Integrated Solar Solutions, moderated by Zané Dippenaar
For Fredrik Hagelberg from IBC Solar South Africa Pty Ltd, monitoring is about much more than checking whether a system is producing power.
"Every time I meet someone who owns a solar system, the first question I ask is: How much money have you saved?"
The reality is that many system owners cannot answer that question. Without visibility into performance and energy consumption, it's difficult to validate savings, optimise performance or identify issues before they become costly problems.
Andre du Rand from Victron Energy Southern Africa highlighted the growing importance of compliance and intelligent control as systems become more integrated.
"It's very important to keep up with safety regulations. We'd like to see more monitoring, more control and more assessment of these systems."
From the installer perspective, Stefan Steffens from Rensol Africa shared a practical example of how monitoring uncovered excessive energy consumption at a holiday home, helping reduce usage and improve efficiency.
As Stefan put it:
"Going solar doesn't make your house energy efficient. It's the equipment in your house and how you manage it that makes it energy efficient."
The discussion highlighted that monitoring is no longer a nice-to-have. It has become essential for performance optimisation, compliance, proactive maintenance and proving return on investment.
Thank you to Fredrik Hagelberg, Andre du Rand and Stefan Steffens for sharing their insights on the role of monitoring, compliance and long-term system performance.
