TerraClim is so excited to congratulate South Africa Wine on winning the Industry Innovation Award at the 2026 Western Cape Chamber of Commerce and Industry Innovation Awards.
This recognition is deeply meaningful to TerraClim and to Dr Tara Southey personally.
Tara is a qualified winemaker who went on to complete her Master’s and PhD, looking at the impact of climate change in the South African wine industry. Without the continued support of South Africa Wine, she would not be where she is today, both in her personal capacity and as CEO and Founder of TerraClim.
It is an honour to stand alongside South Africa Wine as they receive this award. They are truly innovating and transforming industry, not only the South African wine industry, but the wider agricultural sector.
As TerraClim continues to build within the South African wine industry, while also expanding into the broader South African agricultural sector, the focus remains on understanding climate change vulnerability, climate change adaptation, seasonal variability and the impact this will have on crop security for the future.
All of this is carried by an underpinning focus to sustain the farmers of the future.
Congratulations to South Africa Wine on this well-deserved recognition.

This morning we gathered at the LaunchLab in Stellenbosch for the first onboarding workshop of the Stellenbosch Climate-Smart Farming Support Programme.
Together with Stellenbosch Network and Stellenbosch Municipality, TerraClim is supporting local emerging and smallholder farmers with 12 months of access to the TerraClim Webapp and practical climate-smart farming support.
The session brought valuable conversations around local farming realities, climate variability, water pressure and the kind of tools farmers need to plan with more confidence.
Thank you to Hanli Brink, Stellenbosch Network and Stellenbosch Municipality for helping make this programme possible, and to the farmers who joined us with excitement and engagement.

Today, we had the joy of attending the South Africa Wine Summit at the Stellenbosch University Conservatory.

The day brought together a full room of industry voices for conversations on the future of South African wine, from global trade and consumer trends to the 2026 harvest, policy and regulation.

A highlight was hearing Rico Basson reflect on the direction of South African wine and Dr Etienne Terblanche who shared valuable harvest context, using TerraClim maps, as Vinpro launched the 2026 Technical Harvest Report.

Between the live guitarist, delicious snacks and fine wines, the summit carried a real sense of momentum and shared commitment to the sector.

Thank you to Duncan Masiwa for guiding the day, to all the speakers for sharing their expertise and to South Africa Wine in partnership with Nebank for hosting such a vibrant and energising summit.

On Tuesday morning, 27 May 2026, TerraClim and co-facilitated a producer & wine grape growers onboarding session at .
We introduced them to the TerraClim Webapp, discussed the seasonal climate context for the region, unpacked ENSO and the possibility of a strong Super El Niño and ended with a practical walkthrough of the platform.
A special thank you to:
Heineken Beverages for organising the session
Durbanville Hills Wines for hosting the event in their lovely space
The producers and wine grape growers who joined us with such strong engagement
The TerraClim team for all their hard work behind the scenes.
Grateful for another meaningful step in supporting climate-smart decision-making in South African agriculture.

In case you missed it, the latest Climate Compass is here!
Every month, TerraClim prepares a retrospective climate report for , looking back at the month that has just passed and highlighting the key climate patterns, updates and insights shaping the wine industry.
Our May release focuses on April’s climate conditions, including rainfall, dam levels, seasonal context and other climate indicators worth keeping an eye on.
This month, we also introduced chill units to the report. As the season changes, we aim to include the data layers that matter most at the right time, helping the industry track what is relevant now.
The Climate Compass is updated monthly, so keep an eye out for the next report coming in June.

Reflected in the latest update (18 May) from the Department of Water and Sanitation, South Africa’s provincial dam levels show strong year-on-year shifts in several regions, with the Western Cape, Limpopo and parts of the interior reflecting notable changes compared to the same period last year.
We also looked at key dams including Berg River Dam, Theewaterskloof, Voëlvlei, Clanwilliam, Gariep and the Vaal Dam to compare current storage levels with May 2025.
For agriculture, dam levels influence irrigation planning, seasonal decision-making, water security, crop risk and long-term climate resilience.

ENSO, the El Niño–Southern Oscillation, is one of the key climate signals that can influence seasonal rainfall, temperature and agricultural risk across southern Africa.
According to Prof Willem Landman’s (.landman.79) latest Seasonal Forecast Worx update, the current signal points toward increasing El Niño development later in 2026, with the UP model indicating the possibility of a strong to very strong El Niño state into summer 2026/27.
For South Africa, El Niño is often associated with a higher likelihood of hotter and drier conditions, but as Prof Landman reminds us: seasonal forecasts are probabilistic, not deterministic. They help us understand risk, not predict the future with certainty. Understanding the signal helps us act before risk becomes impact.

From 10–12 May, intense rainfall moved across the Western Cape, with some of the highest totals in our maps showing up around Piketberg and the northern Swartland/Bergrivier area, with further high rainfall signals near the Boland/Cape Winelands and southern Overberg.
The impacts across the province have been severe with flooding, damaged homes, disrupted roads, displacement and heartbreaking loss.
Hourly rainfall maps prepared by Caley Higgs, TerraClim’s Data Operations and Research Lead, shows how the storm unfolded over the three days.
Please stay safe, avoid flooded roads, follow official updates and support relief efforts where you can.

The windstorm that moved through the Western Cape from 10–12 May has been a devastating period of damage, disruption, displacement and loss for many communities.

Using hourly windspeed data, this reel shows how quickly conditions escalated across the province; a reminder of how powerful and disruptive extreme weather can be.

Our thoughts are with everyone affected, especially those who have lost homes, belongings, crops, infrastructure or loved ones. Please stay safe, follow official updates, avoid unnecessary travel in dangerous conditions and support relief efforts where you can.

Every act of help matters; whether it is donating essentials, checking in on neighbours, supporting local response teams or sharing verified information.

Day 2 at NAMPO 2026: TerraClim CEO, Dr Tara Southey is on the ground in Bothaville, taking in the scale, energy and innovation shaping the future of agriculture.

From machinery and seed technology to data, climate resilience and practical decision-support tools, NAMPO is a powerful reminder that agriculture is evolving fast.

What started in 1967 with just 200 producers has grown into one of the largest agricultural exhibitions in the Southern Hemisphere m, bringing together farmers, innovators, researchers, agribusinesses and industry leaders from across the value chain.

This year’s theme, Resilience through Innovation, speaks directly to the challenges producers are navigating: climate variability, rising input costs, market uncertainty and the need for smarter, more adaptive farming systems.

For TerraClim, NAMPO is where the conversation becomes real: climate intelligence, agricultural innovation and practical decisions meeting on the ground.
