Call for Mentors for Student Competition Finalists!

The SAIIE Student Competition, now in its fifth year, offers an exciting opportunity for students in Southern Africa to showcase innovative solutions to contemporary problems using industrial and systems engineering principles and practices.

This year, students were tasked with using their knowledge of industrial engineering tools and methodologies, together with AI or Analytics, to improve queues in clinics, banks, university administration offices, licensing departments or hospitals within Public Services. As part of their solutions, students also had to demonstrate how they ethically used AI to support their recommendations and decision-making.

Five teams, consisting of 1 to 2 members each, have been selected as finalists. We are now looking for mentors to guide these teams from 29 June to 31 July. Each mentor will be asked to provide a minimum of three 1-hour online mentor-student guidance sessions during this period.

The call for nominations is now officially open for the 2026 SAIIE Awards – Most Active/Vibrant Student Chapter!

This award recognises the student chapter that has demonstrated exceptional energy, engagement, and impact within the industrial engineering community across Southern Africa. We are looking for chapters that actively create opportunities for their members through events, community outreach, and meaningful collaborations or partnerships.

Whether your chapter has hosted inspiring industry events, built strong connections with industry partners, or created initiatives that make a difference in your community, this is your chance to showcase your achievements.

SAIIE36 Student Competition 2026 | Entries Open

Calling all Industrial and Systems Engineering students in Southern Africa!

The SAIIE Student Competition, now in its fourth year, gives students the opportunity to showcase innovative, practical solutions to real-world challenges using Industrial and Systems Engineering principles.

This year’s problem focuses on a challenge that affects many South Africans daily: long waiting times and operational inefficiencies in public services.

Students are invited to develop solutions that use AI or Analytics to improve queues and reduce waiting times in public service environments such as clinics, banks, university administration offices, licensing departments, or hospitals. Submissions must also demonstrate how AI was used ethically in the proposed solution.

Project Phase

To enter, students must submit an application and a short abstract of no more than 150 words. Entries will be pre-screened, after which 5 finalist teams will be selected and allocated mentors. The final winners will be announced on 7 August 2026, with 1st, 2nd and 3rd place prizes awarded.

The winning team will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to attend and present their solution at the SAIIE36 Conference, taking place from 19 to 21 October 2026.
