A1s are done. Another significant part of the semester is behind you.

Now is the time to take a break, recharge and step away from the demands of lectures, assignments and assessments.

Use the recess to rest, but also to reflect on the weeks behind you. What worked? What could you do differently? There is always room to improve.

SU’s locally developed humanoid robot was among the special guests at last night’s Stellenbosch University US Enterprises CEO Awards. Developed by an Electrical and Electronic Engineering team at the Faculty of Engineering, led by Dr William Duckitt, George provided a fitting glimpse of the home-grown ingenuity being nurtured at Stellenbosch University.

Nearly 100 grade 11 girls from 25 schools gathered at Stellenbosch University (SU) on Saturday, 29 August 2026, for the Faculty of Engineering’s annual Women in Engineering event, ending Women’s Month on a high note.

The event provided learners who excel in Mathematics and Physical Sciences with an opportunity to learn more about engineering, meet women working in the profession and explore the diverse possibilities an engineering degree can offer.

By connecting learners with women engineers and giving them insight into the profession, the event aims to encourage more young women to consider engineering as a career.

From the humble electric geyser to autonomous aircraft, satellites and robots, feedback control plays a crucial role in how dynamic systems sense, respond and adapt.

In his inaugural lecture, Prof Engelbrecht will share how a simple demonstration first sparked his fascination with control systems, and trace his journey from SUNSAT and satellite engineering to advanced flight control and autonomous systems.

𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐃𝐫 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐝 𝐌𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐤𝐢 𝐨𝐧 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐅𝐮𝐥𝐛𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 𝐒𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩!

The Senior Lecturer in Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Stellenbosch University will spend 2027 at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, where he will further his research into the stability and resilience of modern power systems.

His work addresses an important challenge facing electricity grids as renewable energy continues to grow: how to maintain a stable and reliable system.

The exchange will also create opportunities for stronger research collaboration between Stellenbosch University and US researchers.

𝐖𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐀𝐧𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐚 𝐕𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫, Lecturer in the Department of Industrial Engineering at Stellenbosch University, on receiving the SAIIE President’s Award 2026 at the SAIIE Awards & Gala Dinner held at STIAS on 13 August.

The President’s Award recognises exceptional contribution and service to the Southern African Institute of Industrial Engineering (SAIIE). Anthea’s recognition reflects her ongoing contribution to the Institute and the Industrial Engineering profession.
