What are the differences between membrane and mechanical keyboards? Glad you asked!
Latency: With mechanical switches, lower latency usually follows. Mechanical keyboards come with latencies (also called input-lag) of 15-25 milliseconds, whereas membrane keyboards usually score in the 30+ milliseconds range. Lower latency means quicker reactions, and quicker reactions mean more kills and less deaths when gaming and improved accuracy when typing.
Key rollover: This feature allows your keyboard to successfully detect several different key presses at the same time, which is invaluable while playing games that feature input combos (for example, crouch jumping). It's also helpful if you're a rapid typist. Mechanical keyboards almost always have full key rollover, but membrane keyboards usually have limited key rollover.
How they feel: Membrane keyboards have a mushy feeling when you press down on their keys due to the rubber membrane underneath them. Meanwhile, mechanical keyboards feature spring-loaded switches under the keycaps that actuate smoothly when you press them, responding with a click sound. Mechanical keyboards give better overall feedback to the user than membrane ones do when typing because of this design, but they're also much louder compared to membrane keyboards.
Affordability: Membrane keyboards are much less expensive than mechanical ones across the board, making them great choices if you're on a budget. That being said, there are also several affordable mechanical boards on the market as well.
