Agri Technovation SA

Agri Technovation SA Crop Performance Fuelled by Science and Technology is passionate about Bringing AT-ness to every Farmer.

Born from a love for precision farming , our team consists of specialists in the fields of agronomy, horticulture, soil science, microbiology, geographic information systems, chemistry, process- and production engineering. We deliver a sustainable solution for profitable farming, based on the synergy between agriculture, science, technology and local knowledge to make a difference on your farm. Ou

r infield services include MYSOIL CLASSIFICATION™, ITEST™ SOIL, ITEST™ LEAF and ITEST™ WATER, as well as the interpretation of case specific data captured during the performance of these services, with actionable crop production solution recommendations and soil management guides. All captured data is uploaded onto our cloud-based MYFARMWEB™ data platform. MYFARMWEB™ makes it possible for a producer to capture agricultural information throughout the entire production process and save it to one central point, from where it can be accessed, compared and considered to assist the producer in best practice decision-making. Connecting research, production, and practice in pome fruit

Our R&D team recently attended the Pome Fruit Field Day in the Elgin, Grabouw, and Vyeboom production regions.

Days like these provide valuable opportunities to engage with current industry challenges, observe developments in-field, and exchange knowledge across the value chain.

Thank you to Hortgro and all the organisers, presenters, and group leaders who contributed to a well-run and insightful event. Continued collaboration and knowledge sharing remain essential to moving the industry forward.

Where we’re AT: Onion Production in Limpopo

Commercial onions in Limpopo are showing strong, uniform germination under a full Agri Technovation programme. The crop is supported by MYSOIL CLASSIFICATION™, ITEST™ Soil, ITEST™ Leaf, and ITEST™ Water, with strategies aligned to the specific conditions of the block from the start of establishment.

By combining detailed diagnostics with regular field engagement, the programme has remained aligned to changing conditions throughout the season.

The result is a crop holding good condition, supported by decisions made from the soil upward.

Supporting reproductive phenology to improve lemon yield

A trial conducted in the Sundays River Valley on 2PH lemons evaluated the effect of a blended formulation supporting reproductive phenology on fruit set, fruit size, and overall yield.

The study was conducted using a Randomised Complete Block Design (RCBD), with applications timed according to flowering stage:
• 20–40% flowering
• 60–80% flowering (full bloom)

Data collected included fruit number, average fruit diameter, yield per tree, and estimated yield per hectare, supported by ANOVA and post-hoc statistical analyses.

The strongest response was observed from a single application at 60–80% flowering, resulting in:
• +11.67% increase in yield
• +3.54% increase in fruit size

The results continue to demonstrate strong commercial potential through improved fruit set, fruit calibre, and overall orchard productivity.

Small interventions, when correctly applied, can unlock significant gains in orchard performance.

Christoff van der Westhuizen, working alongside Albert Lategan, identified excess moisture as the constraint in this avocado block – and addressed it through effective drainage. A clear example of applied agronomy delivering results.

In avocados, that shift matters:
• Restores root respiration
• Drives new feeder root development
• Improves nutrient uptake
• Supports stronger, more uniform tree performance

Drainage is not just about removing water, it’s about stabilising the root-zone environment. Once that’s right, the entire system responds.

Cross-border collaboration in the blueberry industry

This week Agri Technovation is hosting agents and blueberry growers from Zimbabwe as part of a blueberry industry tour through South Africa alongside agronomists Jovann and Albert.

The first day at Roslé Boerdery near Groblersdal focused on industry discussions, pest management, and practical knowledge sharing in the field. Engagements like these create valuable opportunities for growers and technical teams across Southern Africa to exchange insights, discuss production challenges, and strengthen industry relationships.

Where we’re AT: Macadamia Pollen Germination Trials

This block has been on a full Agri Technovation programme for the past three years, supported by ongoing soil chemistry adjustments and leaf sampling twice per year.

At full bloom, a targeted application of Zinc Phloem together with a complementary formulation was applied on open flowers.

The grower managed the trial independently – from implementation through to harvest and measurement – ensuring the results reflect practical, on-farm performance.

Consistent inputs. Measured outcomes.

Maintaining pepper quality through the season

This pepper crop in Limpopo is being managed on a full Agri Technovation programme, supported by MYSOIL CLASSIFICATION™, ITEST™ Soil, ITEST™ Leaf, and ITEST™ Water, including spray water properties.

The season has required continuous observation and adaptation in-field. Through regular crop visits and ongoing programme refinement, plant condition and crop uniformity have been maintained.

Understanding how the soil, water, and plant interact allows decisions to be adjusted before challenges become limitations.

Where we’re AT: Tomatoes in the Bosveld

This block is on a full Agri Technovation programme, supported by MYSOIL CLASSIFICATION™, ITEST™ Soil, ITEST™ Leaf, and ITEST™ Water, including spray water properties.

The season has been challenging, with excessive rain and cold, wet conditions putting pressure on soil function and crop performance.

Through regular field visits and ongoing adjustments to the programme, the crop has maintained good condition.

When the system is understood and managed consistently, it holds – even in a tough season.
