SASOL PUT 3D SCANNING TO THE TEST.

When you're inspecting critical industrial assets, technology has to work in the real world—not just in a demonstration.

Sasol South Africa was investigating alternative 3D measurement approaches for assessing critical piping and pressure vessels.

HMR High Tech Machine Tools was called upon to conduct on-site testing of Creaform's 3D scanning and Pipecheck NDT technologies.

The evaluation included:

• Pipecheck NDT software
• Multiple scanning methods
• Surface temperatures from 100°C to 300°C

The objective?

To evaluate accuracy, repeatability, ease of operation and performance under elevated temperature conditions.

REAL PIPES AREN'T PERFECT CYLINDERS.

So why inspect them as if they are?

When you're assessing corrosion and material loss on critical piping, the geometry of the asset matters.

Traditional 3D inspection approaches can compare a scan against a nominal, perfectly cylindrical model.

But real-world pipes aren't perfect.

Manufacturing tolerances, deformation, corrosion and other variations can all affect the geometry you're actually measuring.

And when you're inspecting critical assets, the accuracy of that measurement matters.

This was one of the challenges being investigated by Sasol South Africa as it looked at alternative approaches for 3D inspection of critical piping and pressure equipment.

The requirements were demanding:

• Quantifiable inspection data
• Efficient data acquisition
• The ability to work under challenging conditions
• Surface temperatures reaching up to 300°C
