CCS DISTRIBUTES FOOD HAMPERS TO EMPLOYEES
COVID-19 has exerted an excessive amount of pressure on all aspects of world economies from high death tolls to significant reduction in revenue collection. It has changed the world as we know it, with health experts constantly grappling with trying to find a permanent solution to a relentless enemy.
Chambish Copper Smelter Limited which is a result of the Chinese and Zambian cooperation has been emulating the strides that the Zambian and Chinese government have been making to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.
CCS has been putting measures in place to ensure that all employees are protected from possible transmission of the COVID-19 virus even as they conduct their work.
However despite putting all these measures in place, the company is aware that the virus has also affected people’s ability to move and plan. It is for this reason that in May 2020 the company decided to go a step further and distribute food hampers comprising two bags of mealie meal and 5 Litre container of cooking oil for each employee.
Douglas Shumba who is a CCS employee from Acid Department says that this gesture by the company is very timely. He says in this time when people are being encouraged to stay home, grocery shopping is still important but this move will help to reduce the movements of employees in search of the major items on their grocery lists.
Mr. Shumba expressed his gratitude to the company with a message of thanks to management.
And CCS Deputy Chief Executive officer Xu Laixiang says that this move was made in order to cushion the monthly budgets of employees. Mr. Xu says the company was very happy to do this for employees as it would also help to show them that the company cares dearly about their welfare especially in this unprecedented time.

CONSTRUCTION OF DRAINAGE IN KAFUBU DEPOT – KALULUSHI
Chambishi Copper Smelter Limited has embarked on the construction of a drainage in Kalulushi’s Kafubu Depot Area worth over 350, 000 Kwacha through its Corporate Social Responsibility Program. The project was started on 20th July 2020 in hopes of improving the diversion and movement of waste water in the area.
Over the years the lack of a drainage system in the area has led to the terrain succumbing to the adverse effects of heavy rains. Soil erosion has been the result of the extreme weather conditions, as much of the soil in the makeshift drainage has been washed away creating a deep trench. During the rainy season the trench fills up with water thereby posing a danger of death by drowning.
CCS management has stated that is very passionate about its CSR program and this particular project is reaffirmation of that passion and commitment. CCS has spent over 22 Million Kwacha in CSR projects since 2006 and will continue to support the Zambian government and the local people through its CSR program.
Management has added that it was decided that this project would be undertaken after local authorities and people in the area stated that this trench which is in close proximity to residential households does not only pose a threat to the children in the area but patrons of the nearby night clubs as well.
In a telephone interview with Chati Ward Councillor, John Shalubala, he stated that this project will positively change the face of the area as well as preserve lives.
Mr. Shalubala says the project is timely as it has come before the onset of the rainy season and he is very grateful to CCS.
Picture below is the makeshift drainage which has over the years resulted into a deep trench

CCS TO CONSTRUCT A BRIDGE ACROSS KAFUBU STREAM
China Nonferrous Metal Mining Company- CNMC subsidiary Chambishi Copper Smelter Limited has embarked on the construction of a bridge across Kafubu Stream in Kalulushi’s Kafubu Nursery Township at the cost of K867, 577.92. The project was started in June this year and will be completed before the end of August this year.
This is under the company’s corporate social responsibility – CSR program. This project has been undertaken in order to bring development to even the remotest parts of the district.
The project comes as a reaction to the call from government officials in the district who alerted us that the people in that area had cried out on the need to build a bridge across the river. The bridge is a necessity as it will not only create a crossing point but also a linkage between Kalulushi and Lufwanyama Districts.
A chat with the local people also revealed that various types of farming are conducted on the other side of the stream in order to sustain their livelihood. The bridge would help the local people who have farms on the other side to tend to their crops.
In a telephone interview, Chati Ward Councillor, John Shalubala says that for as long as he can remember the people and motor vehicles have been using a makeshift bridge, which is made out of planks to cross to the other side of the stream, a situation that poses a danger of death by drowning.
Mr Shalubala added that during the rainy season when water levels rise, the bridge is usually washed away and many farmers have to find alternative means of getting to the other side. He says the situation makes it very difficult for some of them as they are unable to tend to their crops.
The Civic Leader has since extended his gratitude to CCS management for being a corporation that listens to the cries of the people.
And CCS management has said that it will remain resolute in ensuring that it helps the local people by ensuring that it continues on its path of bringing development in Zambia.

The company on 6th May 2020 donated to the Zambia Environmental Management Agency –ZEMA, hand-washing liquid soap and disinfectants worth K6, 000. This was after the Agency reached out to CCS. The Agency stated that it would like to render help to Chimfunshi Sanctuary which is home to 134 rescued apes.
On 20th May, 2020 an article in the Zambia Daily Mail revealed that the sanctuary needed help as it has also been hard hit by the economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. ZEMA was quick to let CCS know on exactly how it could help through donations and CCS was keen to prove equal to the task.
Apes, which are genetically the closest relatives to humans in the animal kingdom, are also at high risk of contracting the Coronavirus which is why CCS donated items that can be used in ensuring that COVID-19 Preventive measures are thoroughly practiced at the Chimfunshi sanctuary.
CCS Deputy CEO Xu Laixiang who gave the donation to the Agency on behalf of the company alongside Safety and Health and Environment- S.H.E said that the company is determined to stand firmly with the Zambian government and its people in fighting the pandemic. And ZEMA Corporate Affairs Manager Irene Lungu Chipili says the donation which comes at a time when the world is celebrating World Environment Day is not only timely but a step in the right direction in wildlife preservation.
