In an AC electrical system, power factor is a measure of how effectively the current is being used to do useful work. A power factor of 1.0 indicates that all of the current is being used to do useful work, while a power factor less than 1.0 indicates that some of the current is being wasted as reactive power.

Most electrical loads in a typical industrial or commercial facility have an inductive nature, which means they tend to cause a lagging power factor. A lagging power factor can result in several negative effects, including increased energy consumption, reduced efficiency of equipment, and higher electricity bills due to the charges for reactive power.

By maintaining a power factor of 0.95 lagging, customers can avoid these negative effects and improve the efficiency of their electrical system. A power factor of 0.95 lagging is also considered a reasonable and achievable target for most industrial and commercial customers.
