Some of the most important things keeping Zambia moving are the things most people never see.

They're underground.

Inside structures.

Buried in concrete.

Supporting tunnels. Securing rock faces. Keeping operations running safely.

They don't make headlines.

They don't go on billboards.

But when they fail, everyone notices.

The screen mesh processing ore.

The friction anchors supporting underground workings.

The welded mesh protecting crews from loose rock.

The wire rope working shift after shift.

These are the products doing the hard work in the background.

Easy to overlook.

Critical when they're gone.

Behind every productive mine, every successful project, and every reliable operation, something unseen is carrying the load.

Not everything that matters is visible.

203x133. 305x165. 457x191.

If you work in construction or structural steel, you've read these numbers a hundred times.

Most people couldn't tell you what they actually mean.

Here's the quick version:

The first number is the nominal depth of the section in millimetres.
The second is the nominal fl**ge width.

So a 305x165 beam is approximately 305mm deep with fl**ges approximately 165mm wide.

The actual dimensions are slightly different from nominal.

Always check the actual dimensions table when you're designing connections or working out clearances.

The KG/metre figure is where weight calculations come from.
A 305x165 at 40.3 KG/metre versus 54.0 KG/metre [same section family, very different structural capacity and cost per metre].

Web thickness and fl**ge thickness determine the section's resistance to shear and bending respectively.

These are the numbers your structural engineer is working from.

We stock universal beams from 203x133 up to 533x210, in stock grades S355 JR, lengths from 9m to 13m.

Specify the nominal size, the KG/metre, and the length.
That's a complete order.

Roofing season is here.

And every year, the same conversation happens on site:
Corrugated or IBR?

Here's how to actually decide:

Corrugated (8.5 or 10.5 profile) gives you 610mm or 762mm effective cover per sheet.
It's the traditional choice. Widely available. Easy to work with.

IBR (Inverted Box Rib) gives you 686mm effective cover.
Deeper profile means better spanning capability and better drainage.
For longer spans or steeper pitch requirements, IBR is usually the better call.

Widespan gives you 762mm cover with a broader, flatter profile.
Good for large industrial roofs where fewer sheets means faster installation.

The thickness range runs from 0.25mm (Z100 coating) up to 0.80mm (Z275).

The coating weight tells you corrosion resistance.
Z275 is not overkill in Zambia's climate.
It's just the right spec for anything expected to last.

All profiles available in Galvanised, Zincal, Aluzinc, and colour coated.

Sheets can be rolled to any length from 1 to 13 metres.

Specify the profile, the thickness, the coating, and the length.

One call, one supplier.

REINFORCING BAR is the most ordered, least understood product on most building sites.

Everyone knows they need it.
Not everyone knows what they're actually buying.

Here's what the spec means in practice:

The grade is BS4449/SANS 920.
That's not just a label.
It's a minimum yield strength guarantee.
It tells you how much the bar will resist before it permanently deforms.

In a slab or column, that number is the difference between a structure that performs and one that doesn't.

The size range runs from 6mm to 40mm diameter.
The KG/metre figure is what you use to calculate your order weight from your lineal metres.

A 12mm bar is 0.89 KG/metre.
A 32mm bar is 6.31 KG/metre.
Know the numbers before you call.

Stock lengths are 6m, 12m, and 13m.
Matching your cut list to stock lengths saves money.
Every offcut you throw away was paid for.

We stock the full range.
Order by size, length, and tonnage.

If your structural engineer has specified a grade and you're not sure what that means at the supply level, ask us.

That's what we're here for.

This is the month the structural steel decisions get made or get regretted.

The beam that's undersized.
The reinforcing bar that wasn't ordered in time.
The roofing sheet that wasn't specified correctly.

Small decisions.
Real consequences.

This month we're talking about the steel that holds everything up.
The products that don't get celebrated but absolutely cannot fail.

The weight of everything rests on getting this right.

Nobody talks about friction anchors.

They're underground. You can't see them.
They don't have a visible logo.

But pull one out of specification, and you'll know about it fast.

Friction anchors are high-tensile steel tubes, roll-formed and open-slotted, driven into boreholes slightly smaller than the tube diameter.

The compression against the rock is what generates the holding force.

Minimum tensile strength: 100kN.
We manufacture them as OEM supplier to the mining industry across Africa.

That's not a marketing claim.
It means we hold the spec, we control the production, and we stand behind the performance.

Available lengths from 0.3m to 3.0m.
Galvanised or Distek-coated for corrosion protection.

Can be paired with Combo Plate, W-Plate, Osro Strap, or W-Strap to increase areal coverage.

Underground roof support is not the place to compromise on supply chain.

Know your supplier.
Know their OEM status.

Kenneth Kaunda.

A man who believed Zambia could build its own future.
Not import it. Build it.

62 years ago, Afrope started manufacturing steel wire rope in Kitwe.
In Zambia. For Zambia.

That wasn't an accident.
It was the same belief that this country has the resources, the people, and the will to make things here.

Today, we still manufacture on site in Kitwe.
Screen mesh. Wire rope slings. Products going into mines, farms, and buildings across the country and into Central Africa.

The nation KK built is still being built.
We're proud to be part of that.

Happy Kenneth Kaunda Day from everyone at Afrope Zambia Limited.

The rains moved the fence posts.
It happens every season.

The ground saturates, swells, shifts.
By the time dry season arrives, what was a straight fence line is now a problem.

Farm fencing is one of the first big purchases of dry season for a reason.

Field fence is what keeps stock in and wildlife out.

The spec that matters:

Line wire tension.
A loose field fence is not a fence.
It's a suggestion.

Wire height.
Matched to what you're containing.
Cattle, game, small stock all have different requirements.

Post spacing.
Too far apart and the fence sags.
Too close and you've spent more than you needed to.

We stock field fence alongside the posts, stays, and gates to complete the job.

Security gates at 1800mm height.
Homestead gates at 1200mm and 1800mm.
Farm gates from 900mm to 4800mm wide, in light duty and heavy duty.

One supplier. Full fence line.

That's the point.

Zambia's construction sector moves on a seasonal rhythm that most people outside the industry don't fully see.

Wet season: groundwork slows.
Site access gets complicated.
Material delivery becomes expensive.

Dry season: everything accelerates.
Foundations go in.
Steel gets erected.
Roofing happens.

The backlog from the rains gets cleared in a rush.

What this means practically:
Structural steel lead times tighten.

If you're specifying universal beams, channel iron, or reinforcing bar for a Q3 pour, the time to order is now, not when you need it.

Fencing demand spikes.
Every farm, compound, and site that deferred fencing through the rains moves at once.

Lifting equipment utilization goes up.
More activity means more lifts.
More lifts means more stress on your rigging.
Check your gear now.

Supply chains reward the people who plan ahead.

We're ready for the dry season push.
Are your orders in?

The ore doesn't sort itself.

Every tonne of material that comes out of a Zambian mine passes through a screen at some point.

The screen decides what moves forward and what goes back.

A wrong aperture wastes product.
A wrong wire diameter means the screen wears out too fast.
A wrong mesh spec means downtime.

Here's what to specify when you order screen mesh:

Opening (aperture size).
This is the actual gap between wires.
10mm aperture, 4mm wire means 10mm of open space.

Wire diameter.
Thick wire lasts longer.
Thin wire gives you more open area but shorter life.
It's a tradeoff. (Know which one your operation is optimizing for).

Open area.
This is the most important performance factor.
Larger open area means more throughput.
Balance it against wire life.

Length and width of the panel.

For vibrating screens, also specify hook type, hook length, and the dimension between hooks.

We manufacture screen mesh on site in Kitwe.

Square, slotted, plain weave.
For mining, crushing, aggregate, farming applications.

If you're running a screen deck right now, let's make sure it's the right one.
