KAWANA CALLS FOR STRONGER GOVERNMENT CRISIS COMMUNICATION

SIAVONGA – Ministry of Information and Media Permanent Secretary Thabo Kawana has called for enhanced communication of Government programmes and timely dissemination of information, describing communication as the first line of defence during crises.

Speaking when he officially opened the Government Public Relations and Crisis Management Training in Siavonga, Mr Kawana said effective communication must be entrenched in all Government institutions to ensure the public receives accurate and timely information.

He warned that delays and gaps in communication can fuel misinformation and weaken public confidence.

Mr Kawana further urged Government public relations officers to strengthen their skills in crisis response, strategic communication and media engagement.

Meanwhile, the Zambia Institute of Mass Communication Director Kennedy Mwila said the training is aimed at equipping Government communicators with practical skills in crisis management and effective communication to improve coordination and information dissemination across public institutions.

Fellow Citizens,

As the nation enters the official campaign period, I wish to assure the country that Zambia shall remain peaceful, orderly, and secure.

Democracy requires robust debate and the free exchange of ideas. However, no action that threatens peace, unity, public order, or national security shall be tolerated. The law shall apply firmly, fairly, and without favour to all, regardless of political affiliation or social standing. Any individual or group found wanting by the law, from whatever political persuasion, including members of our own party, will be on their own.

I have therefore directed all law enforcement agencies to remain on high alert and to ensure a peaceful environment before, during, and after the elections. Law-abiding citizens are assured of the State’s full protection throughout the entire electoral process.

Hakainde Hichilema,
President of the Republic of Zambia.

PARLIAMENT GOES SOLAR AS 750KW ROOF TOP POWERS HOUSE, SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY

A newly commissioned 750-kilowatt rooftop solar power system at Parliament is expected to not only guarantee stable electricity supply for the National Assembly but also support nearby communities, including Olympia School, in a major boost to Zambia’s renewable energy drive.

Speaker of the National Assembly Nelly Mutti officially commissioned the solar installation, describing the project as a bold step towards sustainable energy and improved power reliability amid climate-related challenges affecting the country’s electricity generation.

Dr Mutti said the project demonstrates Parliament’s commitment to supporting Government’s agenda of promoting alternative energy sources and reducing dependence on hydroelectric power.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Dr Mutti noted that the initiative reflects the institution’s determination to be part of the solution to the country’s energy challenges while ensuring uninterrupted operations at Parliament.

And Head of the Presidential Delivery Unit Kusobile Kamwambi hailed Parliament for investing in solar energy, saying the project will have a positive impact beyond the National Assembly precincts.

Ms Kamwambi said the solar plant will also benefit Olympia School and surrounding communities by improving energy reliability in the area.

She said President Hakainde Hichilema’s administration has continued implementing policy reforms and directives aimed at expanding the use of alternative energy sources, including the installation of solar systems at public institutions and infrastructure.

And Energy Permanent Secretary for Electricity Arnold Simwaba commended Parliament and other stakeholders for taking the lead in implementing the Presidential directive to install solar energy systems in public institutions.

Eng. Simwaba praised President Hakainde Hichilema for spearheading supportive policies aimed at accelerating the adoption of renewable energy and strengthening the country’s energy security.

He said the commissioning of the Parliament solar backup system demonstrates how public institutions are positively responding to the Government’s call to embrace alternative energy solutions.

Meanwhile, ZESCO Acting Managing Director Francis Namakanda said investments in renewable energy infrastructure are critical in addressing Zambia’s current power challenges and ensuring reliable electricity supply.

Eng. Namakanda reaffirmed ZESCO’s commitment to supporting clean energy initiatives that promote operational continuity and contribute to building a more resilient electricity sector.
