Court fines woman for operating illegal day care

IN an act of benevolence, philanthropist Remmy Kangwa has offered to help pay the fine imposed on a woman convicted of illegally operating a childcare centre in the notorious Chibolya Township.

Yesterday, the Zambia Daily Mail carried a story in which 36-year-old Josephine Hamawa of Lusaka’s Chibolya was ordered to pay K10,000, failing which she will serve nine months’ imprisonment.

She will only be released from detention after paying the fine.

This was after she admitted to establishing a childcare facility without authorisation from the Department of Social Welfare.

Before being sentenced, the philanthropist begged the court for mercy, saying she meant well with her charitable work.

Hamawa feared that if jailed, the vulnerable children she keeps at the facility - about 18 of them - may suffer, as they depend on her, with some living with disabilities.

Kangwa, a humanitarian and entrepreneur, said after coming across the story, he felt compelled to come to the aid of his fellow philanthropist.

“My focus right now is to see to it that she is out of custody and that whatever amount of money she was fined is paid.

“Once she is out, then we can sit down and discuss the way forward. If she wants to continue with her charity, we still need to find a way of helping her get the necessary documentation to formalise her charity work,” Kangwa said in an interview.
