Planning for implementation of the framework and helping with supply quality and reliable power is imperative .

As Zambia’s grid continues to integrate more renewable energy, compliance with power quality standards is becoming increasingly important.

Directive 10 of the Revised Power Quality Management Framework from the Energy Regulation Board ERB states:

"All licensed Generators utilizing Variable Renewable Energy Sources (VRES) with a capacity above 5MW shall ensure that the appropriate
power quality and reliability parameters stipulated in Table 1, Part 2 of ZS 387 are measured, including harmonics.”

Compliance with ZS 387 is not a box-ticking exercise. It requires:

1. Properly specified Class A power quality analyzers
2. Correct installation at the Point of Common Coupling
3. Ongoing monitoring, validation and analysis
4. Structured reporting aligned with Energy Regulation Board requirements

Many VRES developers and operators may not have in-house power quality specialists or monitoring infrastructure.

Safetricity Engineering Limited supports developers and licensees through:

1. Professional installation of compliant PQ monitoring systems
2. Preventive maintenance and calibration support
3. Data analysis and technical interpretation
4. Structured compliance reporting to ERB

Safety of Electrical Installation

Depending on the age and alterations made to your electrical installation be it a home, commercial or industrial premise, the property owner needs to have one or more of the following per Zambian Wiring of Premises Code of Practice, ZS 791:
1. Electrical Installation Certificate (also called Certificate of Compliance in other jurisdictions)
2. Electrical Installation Condition Report (periodical)
3. Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate.

As a property owner do you have any of these key documents?

These documents confirm the safety of your installation and that your installation has been designed, constructed, inspected and tested as applicable by a skilled and competent person(s) (signed off and authenticated) giving you a peace of mind. The risks of shocks, burns, electrocutions to people and livestock as well as damage to property and equipment (fires) arising from a poor electrical installation are real.

These requirements are similar to the ones found in the famous IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) and the South African SANS 10142-1, in their case mandatory through legislation.

KNOW YOUR POWER QUALITY

Per ZS 387, Power Quality standards, ZS 791, Wiring of Premises Code of Practice, and other relevant documents, the standard voltage ⚡ in Zambia for public electricity networks and your premises is , single phase and , three phase supply. The permitted tolerance/limits are +/-10%, which are 207-253V and 360-440V. Your equipment (even those rated at 220V, 240V, 380V and so on) is supposed to be compatible and immune from any damages within this voltage environment.

Other countries may have similar or other voltages and limits.

Industrial premises are permitted to use other voltage levels based on their equipment ratings for their own reticulation.

The electric cable current ratings are done under laboratory conditions using Standard Test Conditions (controlled environment and temperature). Your home, office, commercial and industrial premises are not laboratories and even if they were, cables are installed outside those environments.

In normal use, (without being too technical) an electric cable must be derated for temperature, depth of burial in the ground, installation method (open air, conduits, trunking, trays, ladders, etc) whether batched together or not, number of circuits in the conduit or cable tray, spacing, and so on. This ensures that the cable operating temperature remains as designed to avoid insulation degradation, reduced lifespan and fires.

Load Analysis and Power Quality Assessments in Eswatini and Zambia

We recently successfully completed load analysis and power quality assessments in Eswatini at a mine and in Zambia at a food processing company in collaboration with partners and respectively. The objective of both assignments was to measure and log power consumption patterns from grid power including overall power factor performance for purposes of improving energy efficiency, meeting national grid code requirements, and contributing to sustainability goals in the process.

A Power Quality Analyser was used to sample various points of supply at both sites. In Eswatini we were part of partners undertaking an energy audit aimed at driving down the energy costs for the mine. In Zambia the exercise was part of efforts to understand why the power factor was not at desired levels despite deployment of power factor correction equipment throughout the plant. We also measured voltage regulation, harmonic distortion, sags and swells and load balancing at both sites to assess compliance with industry standards, NRS 048 for Eswatini and ZS 387 for Zambia in particular.

Both tasks were successful and reports well received.

Identifying and resolving potential power quality issues as well as energy efficiency opportunities helps lower energy losses, maintaining optimal plant performance as well as extending equipment lifespan at facilities energy.

At Civelect, we believe that reliable power efficiently utilised means a more productive future and sustainable future for all!

Timely message, after ensuring quality all the way, people most times start compromising on the electrical installations, a potential fire and electrocution hazard in the premises.

Attention electricians, DIY'ers and homeowners!

When buying materials for your projects, beware of substandard products like the looping boxes pictured. Also in the picture are sharp bends which can damage cable insulation, leading to safety hazards due to short circuits.

Always insist on high quality materials to ensure your projects are done right, safely, and efficiently.

Don't compromise on quality!
