Following the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between ZCCM Investments Holdings Plc (ZCCM-IH) and the International Council of Swedish Industry (NIR), facilitated through the Swedish Embassy in Zambia, NIR conducted a group-level Grievance Management Training in Lusaka for ZCCM-IH.
The training was officiated by Chief Human Resources Officer, Ms. Betty Meleki, who emphasised the importance of structured grievance management systems in strengthening stakeholder trust and sustaining operations.
Acting Manager – Risk and Compliance, Mr. Darlington Hamusute, urged participants to recognise grievance management as a strategic tool for safeguarding the social licence to operate and ensuring operational continuity.
The session was facilitated by NIR-linked trainer, Ms. Shibani Bose, who delivered a practical programme equipping participants with tools to manage grievances in a structured, transparent, and responsive manner.
Participants were drawn from ZCCM-IH and its subsidiaries and investee companies, including Maamba Energy Ltd, Konkola Copper Mines - KCM, Kabundi Resources Ltd, Zambia Gold Company - ZGC, Kariba Minerals, Mopani Copper Mines Plc, and Copperbelt Energy Corporation Plc.
The training represents a key step in strengthening internal systems to ensure stakeholder concerns are addressed effectively—minimising risk, enhancing trust, and supporting sustainable operations.
Participants gained hands-on knowledge in grievance identification, recording, categorisation, response mechanisms, and escalation processes aligned with legal and community frameworks.
Key takeaways included:
- The importance of adopting a proactive, rather than reactive, approach to grievance management
- Strengthening communication and dialogue with complainants
- Mobilising timely and appropriate responses to grievances
- Enhancing cross-functional collaboration within organisations
- Securing senior management buy-in for effective grievance systems
- Building mechanisms that ensure communities feel heard, respected, and engaged
Upon completion, participants were awarded Certificates of Competence in Grievance Management.
Through this initiative, ZCCM-IH continues to strengthen institutional capacity, promote accountability, and reinforce its commitment to responsible and sustainable operations.
