The Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ) has commended the Government for its initiative to launch a 50-megawatt solar power plant in Mansa, describing the project as a timely and strategic intervention to strengthen the country’s energy security.

EIZ Vice President Finance and Administration Eng. Chiza Nyirenda has noted that the development represents a significant step toward diversifying Zambia’s energy mix, which has historically relied heavily on hydropower.

He explained that increased investment in solar energy will help cushion the nation against the adverse effects of climate variability, particularly droughts that have in recent years affected water levels and electricity generation capacity.

The Institution further stated that the Mansa solar project will not only contribute an additional 50 megawatts to the national grid but also support economic growth by ensuring more stable and reliable power supply for industries, businesses, and households.

EIZ has since encouraged continued investment in renewable energy projects across the country, emphasizing that such initiatives are critical in meeting the growing electricity demand while promoting environmental sustainability.

The Institution has also urged stakeholders to prioritize local engineering expertise in the implementation of the project, noting that this will enhance skills development and create employment opportunities for Zambian professionals.

ENGINEERING A CIRCULAR FUTURE: WOMEN LEADING SUSTAINABLE TRANSFORMATION

A circular future is no longer an option but imperative, says Zambia’s first female Civil engineer, Lucie Kasanga.

Eng. Kasanga was calling on Zambia women in engineering to take a leading role in redesigning systems, industries, and communities around sustainability, innovation, and resilience.

She was speaking during the Zambia Women in Engineering Section (ZWES) Conference which was held during the 69th Annual General Meeting, under the theme “Engineering a Circular Future: Women in Engineering Leading Sustainable Energy, Smart Mining, and Regenerative Agriculture".

She emphasized the urgent need to transition from traditional linear development models toward regenerative and resource-efficient systems.

Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ) President, Eng. Wesley Kaluba, reinforced the importance of inclusion in driving meaningful progress within the profession.

He observed that women are increasingly assuming leadership roles and contributing to transformative projects across key sectors.

“Women are not only participating; they are leading change, breaking barriers, and demonstrating that excellence knows no gender,” he said.

Meanwhile, ZWES Chairperson Eng. Agness Mofya Mwansa welcomed delegates and reflected on the Zambia Women in Engineering Section’s journey over the past decade. She described the conference as a landmark moment as the section celebrates ten years of championing women in engineering.

“This year is particularly special for us. While we recognise that more work remains, the progress achieved over the past ten years is both encouraging and inspiring,” she said.

Eng. Mwansa highlighted key achievements, including increased female representation in engineering leadership and greater visibility of women professionals across industries, while underscoring the continued importance of mentorship and support for young women entering the profession.

PRESIDENT HAKAINDE HICHILEMA CALLS FOR STRATEGIC EIZ–GOVERNMENT ALLIANCE UNDER CDF

The Republican President of Zambia, Hakainde Hichilema, has proposed a strategic alliance between Government and the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ) aimed at strengthening the implementation of Constituency Development Fund (CDF) projects through community training and professional supervision.

Speaking when he officiated the EIZ Annual General Meeting and Symposium held on 18 April 2026 in Livingstone, President Hichilema said the partnership would focus on training local people within communities before and during the implementation of CDF projects.

The President explained that under the proposed strategic alliance, local citizens would be equipped with practical skills and knowledge to actively participate in development projects, while engineering professionals under EIZ would provide technical supervision to ensure quality standards, accountability, and sustainability.

He emphasized that development must deliver tangible benefits to society and encouraged professionals to focus on professionalism, measurable outcomes, and community impact. President Hichilema reaffirmed Government’s readiness to partner with Zambians and professional institutions in driving inclusive national development.

The Head of State further urged engineering professionals to embrace entrepreneurship and ownership within the sector, encouraging them to build enterprises, participate in investments, and benefit from dividends rather than remaining solely in employment. He also highlighted the importance of partnerships and joint ventures, particularly in promoting local content participation within the mining industry.

President Hichilema additionally called for closer collaboration between EIZ and the education sector, urging the Ministry of Education and technology institutions to work with the institution in reviewing curricula to align training with industry needs.

Minister of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development,Eng. Charles Milupi, echoed the President’s sentiments, noting that rapid urbanization has brought complex infrastructure challenges that require strong partnerships between Government and professional bodies.

EIZ President, Wesley Kaluba, welcomed the proposed collaboration, stating that early involvement of engineering professionals in projects enhances efficiency, improves planning, and prevents costly failures. He reiterated the institution’s readiness to support national development initiatives from project inception.

Eng. Kaluba also appealed for the establishment of the Office of the Engineer General and increased representation of engineers at Cabinet level to strengthen technical decision-making.

He further thanked the Republican President for supporting the approval of engineering charge-out rates, describing the development as a milestone promoting fairness, standardization, and professionalism within the engineering sector.

President Hichilema concluded by challenging engineering professionals to deliver infrastructure based on correct cost, quality delivery, and timely completion, reinforcing engineering excellence as a cornerstone of Zambia’s development agenda.
