Some facts to note before you install solar panels on your roof.
The need for solar panels are fast growing and almost every roof you see now, has solar panels.
However, before you install solar panels, there are legal and safety requirements to comply with.
πAs a tenant, it is totally wrong to install solar panels on the roof of your apartment without first informing the landlord and getting the landlord's written consent.
πIf your landlord refuses to give you consent and you still proceed to install solar panels on the roof, the landlord can order for their removal.
πA landlord can terminate the tenancy agreement of a tenant who installed solar panels without his approval.
πAs a tenant, you will be responsible for any leakage on the roof resulting from installation and subsequent removal of the solar panels when you are moving out.
πIf the solar panels results in fire hazards, as a tenant, you will be responsible for any damage done to the building and other tenants' property and the landlord can also claim damages against you.
This is why you must use installations that adhere to safety codes, including proper earthing and surge protection to prevent fires.
πOnly use certified engineers or companies registered with relevant bodies for the installation to reduce or avoid legal liabilities.
πDo not install solar panels on a roof that has structural defects. Carryout a structural survey and ensure your roof can carry the weight of the panels and supporting structures.
Failure to comply with legal requirements can cost you more than what you spent to install solar panels, especially when it results in damage to the property and a subsequent legal battle.
If your landlord says "No", forget about installation.
Ignorance of the law is not an excuse!
