Fire department is responsible for community safety protection within the jurisdiction. Emergencies in the service range from pedestrian vehicle accidents, motor vehicle accidents, house fires, veld fires, rescue incidents, hazardous material incidents and other humanitarian services.
Fire department is established for the purpose of; preventing the outbreak or spread of a fire; fighting or extinguishing a fire; the protection of life or property against a fire or other threatening danger; the rescue of life or property from a fire or other danger; the rendering of an ambulance service as an integral part of the fire brigade service; and the performance of any other function connected with fire.
According to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001; The standard for fire fighter professional competence the mission of the fire department is to save life protect property and the environment.
Fire fighting involves intermittent high-energetic work that increases the heart rate, and may cause fatigue, over-exhaustion and a lower cognitive performance, possibly leading to human errors and/or accidents. As in other emergency services (e.g. police and ambulance work), the emergency nature of fire fighting is characterised by irregular incidents during day and night shifts. Actual fire-fighting is characterised by variable working conditions and unpredictable and heavy physical demands.
Firefighting is one of the most stressful occupations coupled with anxiety it imposes on fire fighters due to unknown situations and unforeseen emergencies. Fire fighters have a tough job with intense psychological and physical demands of analyzing the situation, taking decisions, deploying hoses, dragging them in the burning structure, operating heavy equipment, carrying victims to safe area and many other emergency activities.
The nature of job requires strength, discipline, positive attitude, and regular exercise to cope effectively with the demands.
To qualify and appointed for the job of firefighting, fire fighters have to undergo physical fitness tests, such as the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT). This test measures cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength and endurance. Furthermore, prospective fire fighters have to undergo a medical checkup that clears them from participating in the job.
Fire fighters perform variety of tasks depending on the jurisdiction in which they are employed.
Many fire departments perform general fire fighting duties including but not limited to responding to all the emergency calls involving fire, motor vehicle accidents (MVA), pedestrian accidents (PVA), hazardous material accidents (HAZMAT) and many other humanitarian services that include proactive services and disaster incidents. Fire departments within the metropolitan municipalities have already started breaking the larger firefighting job into smaller tasks to create areas of specialization for their employees like in the United States of America which remains the global leader for fire services.
A fire fighter is defined by National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) as a competent individual who ‘s primary function is to fight different types of fires, rescue victims and mitigate harm in any emergency using variety of equipment.
The complexity of modern industrial and commercial life has created an increase in the skills needed in fire fighting and rescue events. The fire service also known as fire brigade or fire department is one of three main units of emergency services provided by every country to its citizens. The skills required for safe operations are earned and practiced by fire fighters during training sessions throughout their career.
The university together with the fire departments under private and the government play a crucial role to advance the interest of the country by building capacity and resolve emergency and non-emergency problems for the safety of the citizens.
In every country that succeeded to develop and transform their operations, education and training formed the bedrock from which solutions were produced.
In the fire service there are four groups of courses; basic and advance competencies, short management courses and tertiary courses.
The basic and advance competency courses enable fire fighters to acquire skills and knowledge necessary to work in any emergency from simple to complex, whereas the management courses focus more on building competence in the management or administration of the business.
The Bachelor of Science in Fire Engineering and Rescue Management will enable graduates to demonstrate high level of competence in the application, analysis and in-depth knowledge of fire science, building engineering, technology and management.
In view of the above, the Eden University have developed a contemporary curriculum which speaks to the needs of industry, commerce, Government and the general public.
Eden University shall endeavour to train and produce first class Fire fighters and Fire Engineers of high veracity, with modern skills and competencies to meet national, regional and international standards.
