Maamba Energy Limited (MEL), in Sinazongwe District in Southern Province, is Zambia’s biggest Independent Power Producer (IPP) with Zambia’s only coal-fired Thermal Power Plant (TPP). Maamba Energy Limited formally known as Maamba Collieries Limited, in Sinazongwe District in Southern Province, is Zambia’s largest coal mine and is also the nation’s biggest Independent Power Producer (IPP) with Zambia’s only coal-fired Thermal Power Plant (TPP). The company operates a 300 MW (2 X 150 MW units) modern, eco-friendly power plant – the only one of its kind in Zambia – with the capacity to supply 10 percent of the country’s current installed electricity generation capacity. The plant provides diversity in the nation’s energy mix and contributes to the nation’s base load electricity demand with high-availability factor that is independent of climate change, thereby augmenting energy security of Zambia.

Highlights from the inauguration of Maamba Energy Private School's expanded secondary infrastructure.

Maamba Energy Limited (MEL) has commissioned new secondary school infrastructure at Maamba Energy Private School in Sinazongwe District, Southern Province, transitioning the school from a basic school into a comprehensive institution offering continuous education from Preschool to Form 6.

The upgrade includes a 500-pupil auditorium, 14 modern classrooms, two science laboratories, a computer lab, a library and a full administrative block, supporting close to 700 learners and 45 teachers. The expansion aligns with the Ministry of Education's 2023 curriculum reforms and enables learners to progress directly to tertiary education.

"As Maamba Energy grows, it is important for us that the community prospers too. We will continue to work hand in hand with the government of Zambia, alongside the people of Maamba, to create opportunities in the communities in which we operate," said Chairman of Nava Limited, Mr. Ashok Devineni.

This investment reflects MEL's long-term commitment to education and community development in Sinazongwe District as part of its corporate social responsibility framework.
