President Hakainde Hichilema and his Government negotiated the world’s FIRST EVER $1.36 billion debt-for-development swap. This loan was due in 2053 but within the 5 years of the UPND government, skillful negotiations were held with partners .
President Hakainde Hichilema did something nobody expected, debt was bought back and $1.36b loan has been cleared.
In return, Zambia will invest up to $275 million over 15 years to improve its electricity grid and reduce power cuts.
These savings have a link to real development.
This matters for the ordinary citizen. The less money spent servicing massive foreign debts means more money in the long run for CDF, hospitals, schools, and roads and further investment into energy solutions for productivity and more industry.
