Did you know that one of the greatest captains in rugby history was born right here in Gweru?
Today, we are throwing the spotlight on Gary Teichmann, born in Gwelo on August 29, 1967. Before he became a global sporting icon, his story started in our very own hometown!
Teichmann moved down south and went on to become an absolute titan for the Sharks and the Springboks. As the captain of the South African national team, he led them through their legendary, record-breaking 17-test winning streak in the late 1990s.
He is widely regarded as one of the most respected, composed, and successful captains the rugby world has ever seen.
Even though his rugby career took him to the biggest stadiums in the world, we will always proudly claim him as a son of the Gwelo soil. A true gentleman of the game and a local legend! ๐
