Backfilling and Compaction

Backfilling is the process of filling in the excavated area around a foundation. The backfill material can be anything from soil to gravel, compacted to provide support and stability. Depending on the project, backfilling can be a complex operation vital to provide a stable foundation.

We are making considerable progress. An 8 layer brick substructure (commonly referred to as foundation or the box) is almost complete.

The site has weak shallow strata and waterlogged soils. We therefore developed a slender structural member made of steel and concrete to help minimise structural load transfer to the surrounding soils.

For a foundation to withstand the stress, the ground must be carefully excavated and prepared, and that takes much more than simply digging a trench.
