Switzerland is leading a new solar revolution – on vertical walls!
In the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden, engineers have installed 756 vertical solar panels on a roadside retaining wall in the town of Teufen. Unlike traditional roof setups, these panels are mounted at a steep 75° angle — and they work especially well in winter, when sunlight is lower and snow slides off easily.

The project generates over 230,000 kWh of clean electricity annually, enough to power 50+ homes, all without using new land. It’s a smart reuse of existing infrastructure and a great example for other countries facing space limits.

Vertical solar systems may soon become the new face of renewable energy across cities, highways, and mountain areas!
