Update on attempted rescue of a male baboon in Graniteside:

The community came together last week to participate in a joint rescue operation to try and rescue the large male baboon who had been spotted in town over the past few weeks. We think he’d originally been trapped under the tarpaulin of a banana truck and transported unknowingly into town.

Working together with Zimbabwe National Parks, Lianne Lombard from the Emergency Help Group (EHG), Doug Hensberg and William Crane Hire the idea was to dart the large male baboon and translocate him. He was in Graniteside on Stevenson road - at least 30 metres up a tree which called for a 50 tonne crane.

Unfortunately as we were in place with nets and the crane the baboon jumped and scaled a wall. He had been up the tree for 9 days! A few days later he was spotted in Braeside and has now disappeared. We hope he has found refuge in a less populous area, however we are ready to respond should any reports of sightings come in.

Whilst we didn’t manage to safely capture him this time we’d like to thank everyone who courageously tried to assist:
