🌍✨ Vienna in Space – Local Research Reaches New Milestones!

🚀 Vienna is reaching for the stars. In the latest issue of 𝘞𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳 𝘞𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘯 by .zeitung, Philip Walther (head of the Quantum Information Science research group) and Georg Hufnagl (president of the ) reflect on the city’s achievements in space research and the milestones still ahead.

He also discusses its first measurements and what this milestone means for the future of quantum technologies.

🔬 The Aspelmeyer Group at the Faculty of Physics and IQOQI Vienna recreated a full-scale (1:1) quantum laboratory for the .

☕️ The twist: real components were used — meaning the lab could actually work. And yes, they even included messy cables and coffee cups. 😄

💡 You can see the lab in the new permanent exhibition “Science Changes” at the Vienna Technical Museum.

🌐🎉 The work of one of our Master's students has been featured in Scientific American, the oldest continuously published magazine in the US!

🔬 Peter Schattschneider teamed with the SEEC project (Philipp Haslinger, Thomas Juffmann, and artist Enar de Dios Rodríguez) and with Master’s students Victoria Helm and Dominik Hornof to demonstrate the Terrell-Penrose effect in a lab for the first time.

📜 On 12 March 2026, we celebrate the 661st anniversary of the founding of the Alma Mater Rudolphina Vindobonensis, making the oldest university in the German-speaking world and one of the oldest in Europe.

🏆 On this occasion, Rector Sebastian Schütze will honour Michael Scherbela, an expert in deep learning, as an outstanding graduate of the Faculty of Mathematics. Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition!

☃️🎙️ This was the SFB BeyondC Winter Workshop 2026!

🏔️ The workshop took place at the International Conference on Quantum Optics, which was held at the University Centre Obergurgl in Tyrol, Austria, from 22 to 28 February. Since 1984 this conference regularly brings together leading scientists and young researchers to present their latest results and meet for discussions.

🏆 In addition to lectures, lively discussions and outdoor activities, the special research programme BeyondC awarded the "Best Poster Award" to Isobel Bicket, a postdoctoral researcher in Philipp Haslinger's group at TU Wien. Isobel received the prize money of 300 euros for her outstanding work, "Experimental Observation of Electron-Photon Entanglement".
