BHP South Australia

BHP South Australia Our SA operations consist of three mines - Olympic Dam, Prominent Hill and Carrapateena, that feed a central smelter and refinery at Olympic Dam.

We also have an exploration project at Oak Dam. We mine copper, gold, silver and uranium. Our South Australian operations consist of three primary mine assets, Olympic Dam, Prominent Hill and Carrapateena containing some of the world's most significant deposits of copper, gold and uranium.

📚 It’s Book Week! 🐛

Which means across Australia this week there are probably a few more superheroes, wizards, Where’s Wallys and questionable last-minute costumes at school drop-off 😂

We’re lucky to play a small part in the reading journey for local students through our partnership with Books in Homes Australia helping get more books into the hands (and homes!) of young readers📖

Because you never know where one good book might lead... a new favourite character, a big idea, or maybe even a future scientist, engineer or geologist 👀⛏️🔬

Check out some of these little legends from Carlton School 🧡

In the Spirit of National Science week coming to an end, the Outback celebrated by putting on a show for us 🌸

These stunning wildflowers were captured near Olympic Dam by environmental consultant Phil Barron from Barron Environment, who works closely alongside our Olympic Dam environment team to help monitor and protect the unique landscapes surrounding our operation.

Can you name them all?
Here’s the twist… 👀
All but one of these beautiful blooms belong to the same plant family!

Can you spot the outlier? Drop your guess in the comments 🌼

We’re incredibly lucky to experience displays like these in Outback South Australia, where the landscape never fails to surprise us.

🪨 To most people it’s just a rock. To Kimberley, it’s a 1.6-billion-year-old mystery waiting to be solved.

Meet Kimberley, Lead Mine Geologist at Olympic Dam, and busy mum of three.

After seven years helping unlock the geology of Carrapateena, Kimberley now combines science, technology and curiosity to better understand one of the world’s most remarkable copper orebodies at Olympic Dam.

Whether she’s logging drill core, interpreting geological data or piecing together clues hidden deep beneath our feet, every discovery helps tell the story of the orebody and guides the future of mining.

🌱 This National Science Week, we’re celebrating the scientists, engineers and innovators who prove that every big discovery starts with a simple question.

Happy National Science Week! 🔬

🌱 It’s National Science Week! 🔬

And no… these aren’t Eastern Rosellas 😂🦜

But after our famous feathered friends took over your feeds, we thought some of the other species found around our sites in outback SA deserved their moment too!

This year’s theme is Seeds of Science: Nurturing Knowledge for All, and there’s plenty to discover.

From birds and blooms to everything in between, every sighting, survey and monitoring activity adds another piece to the puzzle for our environmental teams. One observation might not tell us everything, but add thousands together over time and something pretty impressive starts to grow 🌱

Will these birds and blooms go as viral as the Eastern Rosellas? Probably not. But we reckon they deserve their moment anyway 😂

Check the comments to see which species you can spot ⬇️

🚨ATTENTION ROCK LOVERS🚨
Look at this Specularite sampled from a rock cavity near the Carrapateena crusher at approximately 1km below surface level.

Specularite or Specular hematite, often called IOCG glitter by team members, is a flakey form of iron ore and is usually found intergrown with pink carbonate crystals ✨

🏨 The busiest hotel in the outback doesn’t take bookings… but it does welcome almost 1.5 million guests a year.

Our villages are more than just a place to sleep after a shift, they’re where our people recharge, catch up over dinner, squeeze in a gym session or simply put their feet up.

Over the last 12 months, our village teams supported almost 1.5 million guests. That meant:

🛏️ Thousands of freshly made beds.
🍽️ More meals than anyone could count.
🧺 Mountains of laundry.
🧹 Endless room turns.
☕ Enough coffees to keep an army going.

That's a Rayleigh good sunrise… 😏

If that pun went over your head, don’t worry.. we’ve got you.

The brilliant reds and oranges you see at sunrise are thanks to Rayleigh scattering. As sunlight travels through more of Earth’s atmosphere, the blue light gets scattered away, leaving those warm colours to put on a show.
