Here’s more evidence of helium’s key role in quantum computing – Microsoft has unveiled a quantum chip that is ‘‘1000 times more reliable’’ than previous models. And helium’s cooling properties are key to the development.

Microsoft says it now aims for a scalable quantum computer by 2029.

Helium demand is only going to grow on this news.

Global helium supply shortages are now impacting the semiconductor industry, which is trying to cater for surging demand driven by AI.

Taiwan’s largest semiconductor manufacturer, TSMC, sees sales growth exceeding 30% this year, but supply remains constrained, particularly for a key component, helium.

The company is expanding its manufacturing capacity in the US, where helium supply is not impacted by the Iran war, however “it will be a long time before we can meet customer demand,” their CEO was reported as saying. And still Australia is producing no helium...

A First World War aircraft, the zeppelin airship, is making a comeback – and this time it’s powered by hydrogen.

Finland has been trialling airships as a reconnaissance and observation tool as part of Nato’s preparations for any moves from an expansionist Russia. Balloons filled with hydrogen allow a 12m airship to ascend into the air like a helium balloon. It can stay in the air for 12 hours and the most obvious benefit is hydrogen’s zero carbon emissions.

If our hydrogen flow testing on the Yorke Peninsula in coming weeks is successful, we’d be happy to see our environmentally-friendly natural hydrogen take to the skies.

Japan is paying more than 30% more for Qatari helium imported since the start of the Iran war. It’s another demonstration of the pressure on supply chains since the Iranians put Qatar’s major helium producing hub out of action.

And it’s another reason why industry should be crossing its fingers Gold Hydrogen’s flow testing in South Australia is successful in coming weeks. Could Australia again produce its own helium?

Intriguing to see helium’s cooling properties are now being used to fight cancer.

Researchers are trialling "cold atmospheric plasma” (a stream of energised gas, in this case made using helium). When clusters of these cancer cells were exposed to the helium-based plasma jet for up to four minutes, the cells became far less able to regrow and shrank by around 65%.

Another reason we need new Australian production of helium, and for it to be included on our critical minerals list.

Now that’s what you call a ‘‘supply chain issue’’ – helium imports to China dropped by more than a third in April. Supply to China out of Qatar, where production sites were hit by Iran in the conflict there, dropped 70%.

Thankfully the US stepped in to reduce the damage.

This is real-world impacts of an element where demand is only going to grow.

How’s this for a demonstration of how helium is only becoming more vital in the hi-tech game?

A new desktop computer speed world record has been achieved by experts using liquid helium cooling, which allows computer chips to run beyond their stock 6 Ghz limit. For the tech savvy, an Intel Core i9-14900KF got to 9.2 GHz, exceeding the previous record of 9.1 GHz set in August 2025.

So more need for helium at a time the world supply has been hit by the war in Iran? And Australia produces no helium?

Gold Hydrogen is weeks away from key flow tests that could lead to a pilot commercial helium program in South Australia...
