How Do I Make My Sleepers Last?
Concrete sleepers that are too thin won’t have the required coverage of concrete over the reinforcement steel inside the sleeper, this can cause concrete cancer later in life. 120mm to 85mm thick depending on the length of the sleeper instead of 75mm will reduce the likelihood of cracking, bowing and concrete cancer. 12mm reinforcement steel inside the sleeper instead of 10mm bars make a big difference also in strength. Some contractors use lighter grade posts to save money, however, these will not last and should be avoided.

PFC posts may also be referred to as C Posts, U Posts, or End Posts. At Durawall we choose to use 2 PFC posts to create a corner, as this allows freedom of creating your own angle. Durawall Bio Retention journey. A Bio Retention is built on a property to temporarily hold and filter stormwater before it enters creeks and waterways. The Durawall system is often used to create the structure for the basins. This one we completed over time at Acacia Ridge near the Oxley creek catchment. After plumbing is installed, layers of specially sourced filter materials are placed carefully, usually starting with a course granular backfill, then Course sand and finished with a Sandy loam. All sourced from various parts of SE qld. Plant species such as reed type plants are then extensively planted to complete the basin. Microbial communities develop over time to break down pollutants.

❓Why retaining walls fail?❓

The posts may not be imbedded deep enough for the height of the retaining wall. Concrete sleeper walls are a cantilevered wall that rely on the principles of leverage. Weight or surcharge that is added to the retaining wall e.g. a fence, water tank, car traffic being too close to the retaining wall. A fence, water tank pad or drivewat should be engineered so that added surcharge is not added to the retaining wall or vice versa the retaining wall can be engineered to handle additional surcharge.

Why do I need a Drainage System?

The drainage system behind a retaining wall is very important! Gravel is used so that substrate moisture which comes into contact with the gravel will fall through to the base of the wall where it is collected by a perforated pipe referred to as an aggi line. The aggi line will dissipate the moisture away from behind the wall reducing the surcharge load off the retaining wall. Geo fabric is wrapped around the gravel layer to stop the infiltration of silt into the gravel layer.

Both. However, Hiring inexperienced or non retaining wall specialists can lead to holes not being drilled deep enough, therefore the wall will fail. It is beneficial to use a retaining wall specialist who knows how to construct a retaining wall in all soil types and conditions. A retaining wall specialist will follow an engineers design even for a wall that is under 1 metre high.
