Somewhere in the house that’s theirs. That was the brief for the upper floor.

Not a bigger master, a separate one.

It’s harder to deliver than it sounds, because privacy and function usually work against each other. Push the master far enough away to genuinely feel private and you’ve created a room that’s inconvenient every morning. Keep it close and it’s just another bedroom off the hallway.

So we drew the entire upper floor as a single sequence rather than a collection of rooms. The retreat at the top of the stairs carries two jobs - it separates the master from the rest of the house, and it works as a second living space away from downstairs. The master opens off it, with a door to its own balcony. Then the walk-in robe with custom joinery and natural light, then the ensuite - timber double vanity, twin black stone vessel basins, twin backlit mirrors, marble-look tiling floor to ceiling. Two of everything, so the morning isn’t a queue.

Private when they want it. Quick when they don’t.

Both, not one at the cost of the other.

That’s what a custom floor plan is for, and it’s the only stage where a brief like this can be answered. No renovation adds it back later.
