Congratulations to ‘s HOFO Flynn Smith completing his first FPC since gaining his instructor qualifications with me some 12 months ago as well as his OPC requirements. Learning to assess effectively is an important part of instructing. What may appear safe may still not comply with company SOP’s which is what the OPC is in part addressing.

No pressure. We’re just deciding your entire aviation future!

That feeling when someone is watching your every move: your checks, your altitude, your radio call, your fuel log… even your breathing. Well not quite but it can feel like that sometimes.

Remember the purpose of check flights is just that, to check everything is safe and you are competent to be on your own. We’re not there to nitpick and criticise your every move.

Relax and do your thing. A good examiner remembers they were in your shoes once!!

“Where’s the money coming from?”
…I don’t know, I’ll find it somewhere.

Every student pilot in Australia at some point 😂✈️

But before you jump into flight training, here’s what most people wish they knew:

• Cheapest isn’t best you will pay for it later in repeats and delays

• Ask how long it actually takes students to finish not the sales pitch

• A good instructor matters more than a shiny aircraft

• Understand the full cost it is always more than advertised

• If taking out a student loan, make sure you understand the true cost

• Speak with current students or graduates about their experience, that is the real result

• Consistency beats rushing take your time and do it properly

Flight training is a huge investment. Make sure you are investing it in the right place.
