Most compliance folders look complete until an inspector actually opens them. Sounds thorough, isn't:

“One inspection a year means you're covered.”
AS 4084 also requires weekly visual checks from your own team, the annual audit is only half the obligation.

“No incident means no problem.”
73% of racking impacts happen in an operator's first 90 days. The ones nobody reports are still weakening the frame.

“A small dent isn't worth logging.”
Under the AS 4084-2023 traffic-light system, even a green-level defect gets recorded. Small now is how amber becomes red.

“Heavier stock goes wherever it fits.”
Overloading causes 28% of Australian racking incidents. Where a load sits matters as much as how much it weighs.

“Signage's optional if the team already knows the limit.”
It's the first thing an inspector checks, and it's mandatory under AS 4084-2023 regardless of what your team remembers.

None of this is common sense. It's the standard. Better to know it than have an inspector explain it to you.

Bent uprights. Missing safety pins. Rust. Sagging beams. Missing load signage. On their own they might look minor, but each one is a sign your racking is due for a proper inspection, not just a walk past.

Small faults like these don't fix themselves and they don't tend to stay small for long either.

Half the racking damage we get called out for traces back to the forklift, not the rack. Here's what we keep finding:

“Any forklift works with any racking.”
Sounds interchangeable. Mast height, turning radius and lift capacity all have to match the system, or you get clearances nobody accounted for.

“Add bollards after the first hit.”
Sounds reactive but fine. Impact protection is cheapest and easiest to plan before racking goes in, not after the first repair bill.

“Train new operators on the job.”
Sounds normal. Most impact damage happens in an operator's first 90 days, before they've learned the racking's blind spots.

“A near miss doesn't need reporting.”
Sounds like no harm done. It's the cheapest data you'll ever get on where your layout is actually failing.

“Replace equipment only when it breaks down.”
Sounds cost-conscious. Ageing equipment drifts out of spec long before it fails outright and it's your racking that absorbs the difference.

None of these are equipment problems. They're planning problems wearing a forklift.
