Recent build by Boats in Wollongong NSW, from one of our 6.8m Hardtop kits. This one was delivered as a hotworks hull, with the owner to provide a few custom finishing touches to the transom/battery box setup among others. A great boat for offshore NSW, features 21 degree effective deadrise hull and flooding keel for soft ride and stability at rest. Go and see Craig if you’re in the area.👍

One of our 655 Hardtops getting underway at Flakemore Plate Boats in Cygnet, Tasmania.
This one’s a twin engine version, setup for up to 2 x 130hp and 365kg total. The twin setups have proven very popular down in TAS, and are available as an option from our 615 Series upwards. Curious to hear peoples opinions of whether you'd go that way if you could, and what's the deciding factor?

GREENY’S 830XCAB BUILD
Post #3 following the build progress of one of our 830XCAB kits in Hobart, Tasmania:

At this stage the main bottom structure is all in place, tacked only. Aluminium shrinks due to heat on welding, and controlling that by careful design-for-build mentality is critical. The general concept is to tack as much structure as possible together to form a stiff box, that will hold its shape when the proper welding commences. Everything’s in a defined build sequence, set out in our drawings and instructions.
A couple of things to highlight from the photos:
- The amount of detail that goes into a kit design, these are just a handful of snapshots of parts of the hull bottom
- Aluminium’s a fantastic boatbuilding material, but can be prone to fatigue cracking if not correctly designed. Note the “soft” details everywhere, smooth transitions that make for smooth load paths, and prevent cracking long term. Tiny details like stringer cutouts matter.
- Alignment marks that simply the whole process.

GREENY’S 830XCAB BUILD
Continuing from our last post on the build progress of one of our 830 Extended Cab Kits in Tasmania:

After the initial setup, the main bottom girders are held in place with temporary spacers to help keep everything square. Then (everything tacked only):
- Lay the bottom stringers in place (all CNC cut to hull shape)
- Start standing up frames, working forward, checking level/square as you go
- Frame up the forward bottom grid structure
- Fit the ballast vent pipe
- Using chain blocks to help, finish pulling bottom plates up and in
- Fit the chine plates

VIEWER CAUTION ADVISED - Promotional video of boat in Actual Waves.

Filming a boat on a quiet sunny day is nice – we get that. Great reflections, steady camera, steady subject, smiling people etc. But it doesn’t tell you anything about how the boat actually performs in real conditions, when its cold and grey and the seas are lumpy. Which is why we love this video of Andy C’s 780 “Predator”, taken off Shark Bay here in Western Australia. Andy’s 2nd kit build with us (of 5), it’s big brother in our range is the 830XCAB featured in yesterday’s post. Hope your Friday’s going just as smooth!

THE JOURNEY BEGINS! GREENY’S 830XCAB BUILD
Joining into our recent series on our growing fleet in Tasmania, we’re going to be featuring some stories and progress on an 830XCAB build in the initial stages just outside of Hobart. The XCAB stands for Extended Cab which features a longer pilot house with room for an enclosed WC-shower on port side. A specific request from the owner for more space has turned into a new model in our range; this one has a few custom mods like checker-plate decks, galley bench instead of seats aft of the helm, and a twin engine configuration.

Combined the deep vee hull and 650l fuel capacity its equally at home for family cruising to far flung places, or as a serious offshore fishing boat for Tasmanian conditions.

Photos are of the kit arrival with clients inspection team on the job, and the first few stages of setting up the bottom plates. The process in brief is to lay the bottom plates down and chock the edges, setup the aft cockpit bulkhead, and fit the main full depth longitudinal girders forming the centreline grid for fuel tanks, and the flooding keel below.

NEW 615HT – replacing the 600HT - FIRST KIT DELIVERY
Our 600 series has a new look, getting the raised sheerline treatment and gaining a little overall length in the process.

This kit is build #2 with us for our owner in TAS, having completed a 680 Centre Cab previously. 3Ds are of the new 615HT, photos are of the 600HT for comparison.

Everything below the gunwale stays the same, keeping the smooth riding deep V water ballasted hull. Same cabin, just re-trimmed to the deck.

655HT TWIN RIG - FIRST KIT DELIVERY
Continuing our feature on Tasmanian builds, this is the first twin-engine version of the 655HT, just arrived and getting ready to go at Flakemore Plate Boats. The transom configuration is setup for 25” legs and 2 x 90-130hp outboards.
This one has the optional lockup forward cabin (not shown in the 3Ds) amongst a handful of other custom mods.
Worth noting is we don’t just use the same basic transom for our twin-rigs and simply add the extra mounts. The change in transom weight has a huge effect on overall balance of the boat, so twin and single versions get their own individual setups to keep ideal running trim and at rest.

SOMETHING IN THE WATER in TAS?
There has to be a reason our boat kits are so popular down in Tasmania, outselling our next best state by 3:1 per head of population. Is it something in the water; maybe those things called “waves” that tend to be large, and all the time, and there’s pretty much nowhere to hide or you don’t go boating. Maybe its having a builder like Plate Boats , delivering a great product and owners spreading the word? Or maybe, just maybe, Tasmania is simply home to Australia’s smartest recreational boaters?😁

BUILD UPDATE – 750 Centre Cab
A feature on a fantastic build from last year from one of our 750 Centre Cab kits - the first with the forward raked windows option. Andy C from Perth came back for his fourth build with us, and delivered a hotworks hull for the owner to complete the fit out and finish off.
Did a fabulous job as you can see from the photos, including some pics from a recent trip to the Montebello’s. I won’t waste too many words describing this one - be sure to check out the video of the 750 doing what it does best.
