Today is Global Shading Day.

Across Australia, shading plays an important role in reducing heat, improving comfort and supporting energy efficiency.

In association with the European Solar Shading Organisation (ES-SO), the Window Shading Association of Australia is proud to support this global initiative for the second year.

Shading makes a difference — to homes, businesses and building performance. If you're part of the shading industry, share how shading makes a difference in your projects today.

Some of the best industry conversations happen off the clock.

Last month, our Barefoot Business event brought together retailers, manufacturers and suppliers for an evening of barefoot bowls and genuine connection. But before we kicked off our shoes, we got straight into business.

A huge thank you to our retailer panel for sharing honest, practical insights on the real challenges facing our industry — from closing sales and guiding customers, to pricing conversations, team culture and building stronger supplier relationships.

Retailer Panel:
Fiona Sombekke — SOM Blinds
Josh McConnell — Delux Blinds
Andrew Bregman — Jim's Blinds, Awnings & Shutters

What stood out most? The honesty. The willingness to share not just the wins, but the lessons. That's what WSAA membership is all about — practical insights, stronger connections and a community that backs each other.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and a special thanks to Lara Apicella and Rollease Acmeda for sponsoring the night. 🙏

Last month, we had another fantastic turnout of members at our Sydney event — thank you to everyone who joined us! 🙌

A standout moment was welcoming Anders Hall, President of the European Solar Shading Organisation (ES-SO), all the way from Sweden. Anders shared the inspiring work ES-SO is leading globally — from Global Shading Day to energy efficiency research and collaboration with the United Nations. A powerful reminder that solar shading is earning serious recognition worldwide as a key contributor to sustainable buildings.

The evening also featured a demonstration by Co-President Jason Lewis on our WincovER program — a new web-based simulation tool that helps homeowners estimate energy and emissions savings from window coverings. WincovER will be officially launched in June at SuperExpo2026 — more on that soon!

Members also received updates on the Certificate III review and valuable retail insights from Dean Salakas of the Retail Doctor Group.

A huge thank you to our speakers and everyone who attended. 👏
