Rates went up again today. The NSW Government's Home Energy Saver loan is still 0%.

The RBA lifted the cash rate to 4.85% this afternoon. If you've been weighing up solar or a battery, the NSW Home Energy Saver loan lets eligible households borrow up to $15,000 at 0% interest, over up to 10 years.

A simple guide to NSW's Home Energy Saver loan 💡
Eligible NSW homeowners and landlords (household taxable income up to $210,000) can borrow up to $15,000 at 0% interest for approved upgrades, including solar, batteries, Level 2 EV chargers, heat pump hot water, reverse-cycle air con and insulation. Canberra's government fleet is about to test vehicle-to-grid at scale.
ARENA is putting $4 million into a trial of up to 130 ACT Government EVs with two-way chargers. The goal is to show that a working fleet can support the grid when demand peaks, and that doing it can make commercial sense for fleet operators.
It's a government fleet trial, not a household program.

On 12 October, a spring heatwave sent NSW power prices soaring. Here's what it means for home batteries.

Sydney's Observatory Hill hit 34.7°C, and with four of NSW's 12 coal units offline, wholesale prices peaked at $23,107/MWh, ABC News reports.

Customers on one wholesale-linked plan earned about $2 million between them in roughly two hours by selling stored battery power back to the grid.

To be clear, that isn't typical. Returns like this only come on wholesale-exposed plans, on unusual days, and they carry their own risks. We're not recommending any plan.

For most households, the everyday benefit is simpler and steadier: using your own stored solar on hot evenings instead of buying power when demand and prices are at their highest.

Battery EVs outsold petrol cars again ⚡🚗

26,287 fully electric cars were sold in Australia in September, 24.9% of new car sales, just ahead of petrol at 24.7%. It's the second month in a row.

More data centres are coming to NSW. Here's what that could mean for your power bill.

About 5 TWh across the east-coast grid last year (around 3%), and NSW accounts for 66% of that. Forecast about 15 TWh by FY30 and about 34 TWh by FY36 (AEMO). In NSW, AEMO expects data centres to make up most of the grid's growth to 2030. The NSW Government's own August paper warns that without reform, data centre demand risks "increasing electricity prices for households and businesses", and 7 GW of coal closes by 2033.

Reforms are still being consulted on, so nothing's locked in. Making and storing your own power with solar and a battery is one of the few ways to take some control.
