5 good reasons you should consider using a metering device with your industrial overlock machine.

If your production needs the elastic to be stretched the same amount every single time, specifically useful for waistbands, leg openings, activewear, swimwear, underwear, a metering device is the upgrade that removes all operator variation.

Hand stretching the elastic while sewing and handling the fabric is never identical, even with experienced machinists. A metering device locks in the exact ratio for you.

Also, for obvious human related reasons on long production runs, operators fatigue and consistency drops. A metering device keeps the feed ratio stable for hours, giving you:
• fewer rejects
• fewer reworks
• a smoother workflow
• faster throughput

It also reduces your reliance on highly skilled operators, which again is not what we love promoting, but the reality of textile manufacturing in Australia. Without a meter device, the operator must control how much the elastic is stretched, how evenly it’s applied and how it feeds into the overlock.

Automating this means newer operators can achieve the same quality as experienced ones exactly what modern manufacturing needs to stabilise output and encourage more Australian brands to manufacture on shore.

And if your elastic is slippery, narrow, prone to rolling or prone to over‑stretching, a metering device controls the feed tension and prevents distortion, giving you a cleaner, more professional finish.

Automation isn’t just about speed it’s about consistency, quality and a production line that works smarter.

Have you ever seen an automatic button sewing machine with an automatic button feeding system??

The machine and feeder are fully connected, working together in one seamless cycle. Press the pedal, the machine sews, the thread trimmer activates, and the feeder positions the next button automatically. Repeat, repeat, repeat...the result, consistency, speed and ease.

Juki, world leaders in garment manufacturing innovation, design equipment to remove bottlenecks, reduce reliance on highly skilled operators where we know there is a shortage, especially in Australia and maximise production efficiency.

By introducing an automatic button feeder, you eliminate manual button loading, improve consistency and dramatically increase output. The upfront cost doesn’t always make sense at first glance, but once you calculate time saved, labour reduced and quality improved, automation becomes the smartest investment you can make.

Which industrial sewing machine is the right machine for what you do?

With so many brands and models out there, how do you know if you’re actually buying the right machine to get the job done? When you work with our sales team and technicians, we go through all the details that matter. We want to know what you’re making now, what you plan to make in the future, your thread size, how you’re currently producing it, the materials you use and the finish you need. All of these details help us determine which machine will genuinely support your workflow.

Something to keep in mind is that industrial machines are designed for full production environments. There isn’t an “out of the box” industrial sewing machine that does everything. Each machine is built for a specific purpose, and that’s why choosing the right one matters. Our job is to make sure the machine you invest in is one you can rely on for years to come not just today, but as your production grows and changes.

Industrial walking foot sewing machine vs industrial compound feed sewing machine. What is the difference?

As you can see in our short demo, the Jack walking foot machine shows that only the presser foot “walks” or steps across the fabric while the feed dog moves it from underneath. This gives you extra grip and helps stop layers from slipping, which is why walking foot machines are so popular for upholstery, canvas products, bags and other bulky materials.

The Juki compound‑feed machine takes it a step further. Instead of just the foot and feed dog moving the fabric, the needle and needle bar also travel with the material. All three components feed together, which gives you much more control, smoother feeding and far more consistent stitches especially on leather. Because the needle moves with the material, it reduces drag and helps prevent bruising or marking the leather.

A walking foot is great for general heavy duty work, but a compound feed really shines when you need precision, consistency and a cleaner finish on leather and other textured materials.
