Recent research from Curtin University has added to the proof that Australian welders face real exposure to harmful carcinogens, yet the use of higher-order controls needs improvement.

The hierarchy of controls is clear: elimination and substitution at the top, PPE at the bottom.

At-source fume extraction sits high on that hierarchy, capturing contaminants before fumes reach the breathing zone, and relying solely on general ventilation or respiratory protection just isn't enough.

By relying on technology such as integrated torch extraction, you can provide the most effective protection for your welders!

The risk for welders is real.

In 2017, the International Agency for Research on Cancer reclassified welding fumes from "Possibly Carcinogenic" to "Carcinogenic to Humans."

Furthermore, research shows 90% of Australian welders are exposed to welding fumes, with nearly half working in confined spaces.

At BINZEL, we've been developing comprehensive fume extraction solutions for over 40 years, and we're passionate about creating safer workshops for the people who make Australian manufacturing possible.

Do you know what ‘digitalisation’ means in the context of welding?

It’s not the same as automation in welding, which uses digital systems to enhance the productivity of a workshop for welders.

Rather, digitalisation refers to the recording and logging of data for welding, which is itself an analogue process.

For example, digitalisation in welding can be used to collect data that determines the amount of energy individual components of a welding setup use, and where potential savings can be spotted.

Many welding operations do not fully utilise digitalisation, which is a missed opportunity considering the potential for this kind of data analysis is extremely high.

If you’re looking to increase your workshop’s productivity, it’s worth considering how digitalisation can help you achieve that goal.

Robotic welding delivers consistent quality, but only when every component works together seamlessly.

BINZEL's robot periphery parts keep your automated systems running:

✅ Swanneck realignment and collision mounts: Protect expensive robots from damage during inevitable contact events

✅ Torch exchange stations: Enable preventative and reactive maintenance without stopping production

✅ Pneumatic reamer and wire cutters: Eliminate slag and spatter buildup, trim excess wire automatically

To discuss how best to integrate these into your workshop, get in touch with our friendly team - we're always happy to help!

BOMAG is a global market-leading company that specialises in creating machines for compacting earth, asphalt and waste.

At their Boppard facility in Germany, 70 welders tackle demanding steel construction work, welding frames, hoods, and operator platforms for heavy equipment that must withstand extreme loads.

In this work, welders frequently change positions on workpieces fastened to huge turntables, placing great strain on their wrists in difficult-to-access locations.

After testing BINZEL's MB EVO PRO welding torches, BOMAG found the solution: lighter weight, improved mobility, and better cooling than previous models, thanks to new cable assembly technology and a ball-joint design.

The economic efficiency, long service life of wearing parts, and ease of repair sealed the decision, and for over 30 years, BOMAG has trusted BINZEL for their most demanding welding tasks.
