WHEN THE THUNDERDOME WAS OUR TEST BENCH.

Dave Weatherhead’s #58 Ford XF Falcon AUSCAR, carrying Yella Terra during the formative years of Australian superspeedway racing.

The XF Falcons brought Ford V8 power to the Calder Park Thunderdome, with the early cars running 351 Cleveland engines and bodywork developed specifically for high-speed oval competition.

Weatherhead wasn’t only behind the wheel. Period records also credit him with building the engine for fellow AUSCAR competitor Darryl Speers’ #31 in 1988, a reminder of how hands-on these early teams really were.

The Yella Terra decal on the front guard represented more than sponsorship. Holden and Ford AUSCARs competing at Calder were required to run Yella Terra roller rockers, putting Australian-made valvetrain components through sustained high-rpm racing under some of the toughest conditions in the country.

THE CAR THAT TOOK AUSTRALIA INTO THE NINES.

Eddie Thomas and the legendary Old No. 17, a car that helped drag racing in Australia take an enormous step forward.

Built in 1965, the 140-inch, aluminium-bodied dragster was Australia’s first true American-style rail. Within weeks of its debut, Eddie ran 9.76 seconds at 150mph, becoming the first Australian to break both the nine-second and 150mph barriers over the quarter-mile.

Eddie’s influence extended beyond the track. Eddie Thomas Speed Shop became one of the pioneering names in Australia’s emerging performance industry and was among the Melbourne outlets supplied with modified cylinder heads by Perfectune, the engineering company behind Yella Terra.

It was an era built by racers, machinists and Australian businesses willing to develop their own solutions and test them under real conditions.

Before the industry had become established, these were the people building it.

THE KING OF AUSCAR.

Brad Jones and the unmistakable red #8 CooperTools Holden Commodore, one of the defining cars of Australian superspeedway racing.

Jones claimed five consecutive AUSCAR championships between 1989/90 and 1993/94, establishing himself as the dominant driver of the category’s peak era.

Yella Terra’s connection to that period ran deeper than trackside branding. The 1991/92 championship concluded with the Yella Terra 200 at Calder Park, while period AUSCAR regulations made provision for Holden cylinder heads to be modified for Yella Terra roller rockers.

An era when Australian-built performance components were being developed, fitted and tested under sustained race conditions at the Thunderdome.

PART OF THE ROAD TO AN AUSCAR TITLE.

Terry Wyhoon’s unmistakable #25 Holden VP Commodore, carrying Yella Terra across the bonnet during the 1993/94 AUSCAR season.

That year, Wyhoon finished runner-up in the championship, another major step in a rise that would eventually see him claim the 1995/96 AUSCAR title.

For Yella Terra, the Calder Park Thunderdome was more than a place to display the name. AUSCAR became one of the proving grounds for our roller-rocker technology, with Holden and Ford V8s running at sustained engine speeds under genuine race conditions.

It was Australian engineering being tested where it mattered: on the track, under pressure.
