There is a distinct moment at the end of a project where you look around and realise the magic didn't just happen in the finishes... it started on day one with the team you brought together.

This home holds such a special place for us, and it really comes down to having everyone on board with the same vision from pre-construction all the way to the final handover.

The brief from our incredible clients was close to our hearts: preserve the history of the home they’ve loved for years, and add a beautiful, healthy, sustainable extension.

Here’s the thing people often miss…
The tighter we build, the more intentional we need to be about moisture management.

Because moisture doesn’t care how expensive the build is.
Or how good the insulation is.
Or how airtight the home is.

If water gets trapped behind the cladding with nowhere to drain or dry, the building will eventually let you know about it. And usually not in a fun way.
That’s why drained and ventilated cavities matter so much in modern construction.

Every single time you drive onto Flat Rock Rd, the view just stops you in your tracks. Morning, noon, or night, the landscape changes... but the magic doesn't.

Building this home was a beautiful journey, though it definitely kept us on our toes.

We were deep in COVID lockdowns, and the clients had to choose every tile and tap online without ever touching them. Pair that with a frame that turned out to be completely eaten out by termites, and we had a real challenge on our hands. We ended up pulling the whole thing down, salvaging every piece we could reuse later.

Look at the results, though! Between Erin’s incredible design work and the stunning recycled timber trusses from our mates at Recycled Timber Specialists, it turned into an absolute masterpiece.

Building on a bushfire-prone block completely changes the game. But honestly? Most people find out their BAL (Bushfire Attack Level) rating after they’ve already bought the land.

By then, you're already locked in, and those design and budget conversations get stressful real quick.

Some projects just stay with you... Third St is one of those.

From day one, I just clicked with our amazing clients, Jess and Adam. Our relationship was so good that they moved to Queensland for a job while we built their home. And that’s a level of trust I’ll never take for granted.

Erin from did an incredible job creating these intimate spaces, framing views of the gum trees from almost every window.

But what really gives this home its soul is the material. We used reclaimed timber from the original house, along with salvaged pieces from old wharves and bridges. It’s a high-performing, energy-efficient home that feels like it’s always belonged in this landscape. 🌿

What an incredible week!

We handed over a beautifully crafted SIP Passive House for our mates and amazing clients. Site signs and fencing went up for a fresh new high performance which is starting in 2 weeks.

The care and craftsmanship at our Alistair Knox retrofit continues as the team tackle the fix. And we are almost ready for the sunken lounge pour at phase two of our Warrandyte project with and and .consulting - this one has needed care and thought given our clients are still living in the home immediately above where we are working!

I rounded the week out by attending open site - what an amazing project and equally amazing and dedicated builder 🤘🤘

The Australian bush doesn’t care how beautiful your floor plan is.

One of the mistakes we see is people treating BAL like a final box to tick after they’ve already fallen in love with the floor plan. By then, you’re not designing for the site anymore. You’re negotiating with it.

Good bushfire design starts long before material selections and compliance reports. It starts with understanding the land. The slope. The vegetation. The exposure. The way the building sits and responds to risk.

Because resilient homes are rarely accidental.
