Excellence Awards 2026 | Miō Googong

Miō Googong was named the winner of the Apartments and Units up to 3 Storeys category at the Master Builders Association ACT and Asset Construction Hire Excellence Awards 2026, held in Canberra this September.

The award was received by builder Milin Builders and developer Base Developments.

BSE was engaged to provide mechanical and electrical engineering design services across the project, from concept and development through to construction and certification.

As part of our mechanical engineering scope, our team undertook CFD modelling for the car park ventilation design, supporting a performance-based solution that moved beyond the standard approach. The design uses carbon monoxide sensors to control the ventilation fans based on demand, helping to maintain effective ventilation while improving energy efficiency.

Located just 20 minutes from the centre of Canberra, Miō Googong comprises 116 townhouses, with a mix of two, three, and four-bedroom homes and floorplates of up to 164 square metres. Residents can also choose between light and dark finishes for their new home.

Designed by DNA Architects, the development takes a village-inspired approach, with varying roof pitches, contrasting premium material palettes, and expansive double-frontages giving individual blocks their own character. Communal green spaces throughout the development further contribute to its cohesive neighbourhood feel.

Project | Western Sydney International Airport Aviation Rescue Fire Fighting Facility

With the first international passenger flight taking off from Western Sydney International Airport (Nancy-Bird Walton) today, crossing the Tasman to Auckland, we thought it was a great time to reshare our work on WSI’s Aviation Rescue Fire Fighting Facility.

BSE was engaged by Comtex to provide electrical engineering design finalisation services for the Aviation Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) Facility at WSI. The airport was designed to reduce pressure and congestion at Sydney Airport, serving as Sydney’s second major airport, and will operate without a curfew.

The ARFF Facility was designed to achieve a 5 Star Green Star rating and will provide a Category 10 service, the highest level of emergency response able to cater to the largest aircraft, including the Airbus A380. The size of the aircraft requires extensive rescue and firefighting cover as determined by the Civil Aviation Authority. The project also includes an airside Hot Fire Training Ground (HFTG) and other associated facilities.

With the ARFF Facility being integral to the operations of the airport, a key focus of the electrical design is the uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems and the standby generators, along with their accompanying diesel fuel storage and transfer systems. This is to ensure continued operations even when there are issues with the mains power supply.

Other highlights include the private building management system (BMS) and solar array. Compared to separate control systems, a BMS offers control and optimisation of equipment cycles with algorithms focused on energy efficiency. The system allows for energy-saving strategies such as precise start-up and run times, eliminating overlaps between systems such as HVAC, adjustments for seasonal conditions, and more.

Our focus is delivering robust, future-ready electrical systems that align with the airport’s long-term operational and sustainability goals. Working collaboratively with Comtex and other stakeholders, we’re proud to help bring the Aviation Rescue Fire Fighting Facility to life as part of Western Sydney’s next-generation airport.”

Excellence Awards 2026 | The Borough Stage 1

The Borough Stage 1 was named Apartment Project of 2026 at the Master Builders and Asset Construction Hire Excellence Awards, held in Canberra in September. The award was received by builder Elevated.

BSE was engaged to deliver mechanical and electrical engineering design services for Stage 1 of The Borough. Our team provided comprehensive engineering services from concept through to construction, including CFD modelling and reporting for the underground car park and condenser farms. The CFD work provided an opportunity for the team to assess the performance of the car park and condenser farm arrangements beyond the standard design approach, supporting a considered and compliant solution for the development.

Master Builders ACT highlighted the project’s ‘bold industrial design’, ‘exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail’, and the ‘seamless coordination of exposed services and prefabricated components’. The judges also noted the consistency and durability delivered across all 162 apartments, recognising the project’s strong architectural identity and functionality.

Designed by DKO Architecture, Stage 1 comprises two buildings, The Brixton and The Junction, with a total of 162 apartments connected by a shared underground car park.

Located in the scenic Molonglo Valley, The Borough offers residents convenient access to Denman Village Shops, Evelyn Scott School, and the Canberra city centre, which is just a 15-minute drive away. The development comprises a mix of one, two, and three-bedroom apartments, with The Brixton featuring generous floor plans averaging approximately 90 square metres.

A standout feature of The Brixton is its winter gardens, which provide flexible additional space that can be adapted to suit residents’ needs, whether as a home office, gym, storage area, or additional bedroom.

The Property Congress 2026 | BSE Attendee

Welcome Q&A | Brian McDonnell, General Manager – QLD

We’re pleased to welcome Brian McDonell to BSE as our new General Manager – QLD.

Brian brings more than 25 years of experience across building services, design management, and project delivery, with a career spanning complex projects across the health, education, aviation, commercial, sporting, and civic sectors. A Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland, Brian holds a B.Sc in Building Services and an Advanced Diploma in Engineering.

Jonathan Ramajoo, National General Manager and Director – QLD, welcomed Brian to BSE, sharing:

“Brian brings extensive experience and a strong track record of delivering complex projects, particularly across the Queensland market. His experience delivering large and complex institutional projects positions BSE’s Queensland team well for its next phase of growth, while his wealth of experience across the healthcare and education sectors will be a real asset. His focus on leadership, collaboration and developing people aligns closely with our culture at BSE, and we’re delighted to have him on board to support and strengthen our Queensland team as we continue to grow.”

Throughout his career, Brian has led multidisciplinary teams and worked closely with clients, design teams, and delivery partners to achieve coordinated, integrated outcomes. His experience spans the full project lifecycle, from design management and technical due diligence through to project delivery, stakeholder engagement, and team leadership.

His Queensland project experience includes major healthcare developments such as New Toowoomba Hospital, Sunshine Coast University Hospital, Herston Quarter STARS, and Gold Coast Private Hospital, as well as education projects including Fortitude Valley State Secondary College and the University of Queensland Andrew Liveris Building. He has also contributed to significant aviation, commercial, sporting, and civic projects across Australia and internationally.

With a strong understanding of the role building services play in the design, sustainability, and long-term performance of buildings, Brian brings a broad technical and leadership perspective to his new role at BSE.

BSE Spotlight: New BSE Website

In this edition of BSE Spotlight, we’re shining a light on something we’ve been working towards for much of the year: the new BSE website! We’re excited to share that we’ve finally launched the new site! 🎉

The goal was to create a home for all the great work that does, while making it easier to explore the projects, people, and expertise that make BSE what it is.

One of the new features is dedicated pages for our Hubs, giving viewers a chance to get to know the local leaders in each office, and get a feel for the people and culture that make each team unique.

We’ve also created pages for each of our disciplines, with room to dive deeper into our experience and expertise as we continue to build out the site.

Ultimately, we wanted to make it easier to get to know BSE, whether you’re a prospective client, future team member, or simply interested in finding out more about what we do.

BSE Spotlight: Interiors & Refurbishment Team QLD

In this instalment of BSE Spotlight, we sat down with Queensland’s Interiors & Refurbishment (I&R) team leaders to learn more about them, their roles at BSE, and the interesting work they’re delivering.

BSE delivers specialist engineering and consulting services across the full spectrum of building services. Our work is delivered through Buildings and Interiors teams, supported by multidisciplinary specialists who collaborate to provide coordinated solutions. The Interiors & Refurbishment team focuses on fit-out and refurbishment projects, ensuring building services align with design intent while remaining practical to operate and maintain, particularly within live or constrained environments.

The team is led by Peter D’Astuto, Senior Associate, I&R Lead – QLD, supported by Queensland’s I&R discipline leads: Jason van Koersveld (Mechanical), Alex Radford (Electrical), Douglas Neufeld (Hydraulic), and Allen Taylor (Fire Protection).

Together, they bring expertise across all major building services disciplines, supporting clients through complex projects with a focus on collaboration, technical excellence, and practical outcomes.

Peter shared his thoughts on the value of a dedicated I&R capability:

“Our Interiors & Refurbishment team brings together specialists across each building services discipline, enabling us to deliver coordinated, practical solutions for complex fit-out and refurbishment projects. Supported by BSE’s broader specialist expertise, including acoustics, sustainability and other technical services, we’re able to provide clients with integrated solutions tailored to the unique requirements of each project.

I’m proud of the team we’ve built in Queensland and grateful for the opportunity to lead such a talented group. I look forward to continuing to strengthen our client relationships, supporting our people and working with our project partners to deliver outstanding outcomes.”

He has a strong track record delivering complex projects and leading high-performing teams, with a genuine focus on quality, collaboration, and client relationships. His approach aligns closely with how we work at BSE, and we're confident he'll provide strong leadership for our NSW team as it moves into its next chapter.”

Joe is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer and Member of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers, with more than 20 years of experience across the UK and Australia. He has led multidisciplinary teams on major projects across the cultural, education, health, and commercial sectors, and has developed broad experience across project delivery, business operations, and team development.

He also brings a strong commitment to the future of the building services industry, including his ongoing work connecting Australian universities with London South Bank University to support building services education in Australia.

In New South Wales, Joe's project experience includes Naala Badu (Sydney Modern), UTS Central – Tower 2, the Blacktown Hospital Redevelopment, and the John Hunter Hospital Health Precinct.
