YOUR WINTER HEATING CHECKLIST
Use this checklist to help your heating operate effectively and keep your home comfortable.

CONTROLLER SETTINGS
- Select HEAT mode, usually shown by a sun symbol, rather than AUTO operating mode.
- A practical occupied setting is 20–22°C.
- AUTO fan is generally suitable for everyday use.
- On a wall split, direct warm air down and into the room using the controller.

DUCTED ZONING
- Match active zones to your routine instead of heating every room at the same time.
- On/off zones direct airflow but do not measure room temperature; the system sensor will be located in a common zone.
- MyAir temperature-controlled zones use a room sensor to adjust the damper and airflow towards the set point.
- Turning off half the zones does not necessarily halve energy use; results depend on the active area, heat loss and zoning setup.

AIRFLOW AND FILTERS
- A dirty filter can reduce heating capacity and increase noise, run times and energy use.
- Reusable mesh filters may be vacuumed or washed with cool or lukewarm water, then dried completely in the shade.
- Disposable filters require replacement rather than washing.
- Do not operate the system without its filters fitted.

HOLDING HEAT IN THE HOME
- Seal obvious draughts without blocking required ventilation.
- Close curtains and blinds after useful winter sunlight has passed.
- Check ceiling insulation for complete, correctly positioned coverage.
- Assess duct sealing, insulation and glazing before major upgrades.

USE WINTER SUN AND SOLAR
Open curtains for direct winter sun. With rooftop solar, daytime heating may use more of your own generated power and reduce heating after sunset.

KNOW WHAT IS NORMAL
During cold, damp weather, moisture can freeze on the outdoor coil. The system periodically enters defrost mode to melt it. Heating may pause, the indoor fan may slow or stop, and steam or water may come from the outdoor unit.

Defrost may occur more often in damp or foggy conditions than during dry cold weather.

DIRTY FILTERS DO MORE THAN RESTRICT AIRFLOW

Filters capture airborne dust before it reaches the indoor coil and fan. As dust accumulates in a filter, resistance increases and less air can move through the system.

WHAT CAN A DIRTY FILTER CAUSE?

- Reduced heating capacity and longer heat-up times.
- Increased noise at the return-air grille or indoor unit.
- Longer run times and increased energy use to maintain the same comfort level.
- Additional strain on the indoor fan and other components.
- Dust buildup on the coil and fan if the filter is damaged, missing or poorly fitted.

WHAT CAN OCCUPANTS SAFELY CLEAN?

WALL-MOUNTED SPLIT SYSTEMS
Most wall splits have reusable mesh filters behind the front panel. Turn the system off before opening the panel.

Gently vacuum the filters or wash them with cool or lukewarm water. Allow them to dry completely in the shade before reinstalling them.

Do not use hot water, solvents or strong detergents, and do not operate the system without the filters fitted.

DUCTED SYSTEMS
The filter is generally located behind the return-air grille. If it is safely accessible and washable, it may be vacuumed or washed.

Some ducted filters are disposable and require replacement rather than cleaning. Disposable filters often have a cardboard frame and may be labelled as non-washable. Check the manufacturer's instructions before cleaning.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD FILTERS BE CHECKED?

Check them regularly during periods of heavy use. Homes with pets, recent renovation work or higher dust levels may require more frequent cleaning.

Cleaning filters helps protect airflow, reduce airborne dust and pollen, and maintain efficient operation. Cleaning the indoor coil, fan or drainage system should be carried out by a qualified air-conditioning technician.

DUCTED ZONING: HOW TO USE YOUR ZONES EFFECTIVELY

Zoning allows a ducted system to direct heated air to selected areas of the home. Used well, it can improve comfort without heating every room to the same level at the same time.

ON/OFF ZONES AND TEMPERATURE-CONTROLLED ZONES

On/off zones open or close a damper to control airflow to the rooms in that zone, but they do not measure room temperature. With this type of zoning, system temperature is measured at the main controller or a separate sensor. Where a common or constant zone is used, the sensor is generally located within that area.

Temperature-controlled zones have their own sensor and can adjust the damper and airflow as the zone approaches its set point.

MYAIR ZONING

MyAir is the primary residential zoning platform we install. With individual sensors, it can monitor each zone and adjust airflow towards the selected set point.

The sensors are often wireless and can be moved to suit your comfort requirements. Place them where they can measure the occupied area without being directly affected by supply air, sunlight or another heat source.

USING YOUR ZONES EFFECTIVELY

- Match zones to your routine. Living areas may need heating during the day or evening, while bedrooms may only need heating closer to bedtime or when occupied.
- Use the zone controller rather than manually closing ceiling outlets. The controller coordinates the motorised dampers and programmed airflow settings.
- Depending on the design, minimum airflow may be managed through a constant zone, bypass zone, controlled damper positions, variable fan control or a combination.

DOES SWITCHING OFF ZONES SAVE ENERGY?

It can reduce unnecessary heating, but the saving is not proportional to the number of zones switched off.

The result depends on the size of the active zones, heat loss, temperature setting, system capacity and zoning setup.

Zoning is most effective when it matches how the rooms are used and is allowed to operate as designed.

AIR CONDITIONING SETTINGS
HEAT, AUTO OR FAN: WHAT DO THEY ACTUALLY DO?

Controllers use similar words and symbols, but AUTO can appear in two places and mean two different things, which sometimes gets a little confusing.

HEAT MODE — SUN SYMBOL
Select HEAT when you want the system to warm the home. It is usually shown as a sun symbol. The inverter adjusts its output as the room approaches the set point.

AUTO MODE — [A]
AUTO operating mode allows the system to decide whether heating or cooling is required based on the room temperature and set point.

It is used for automatic changeover, particularly in commercial systems. For most homes in winter, HEAT provides more predictable operation.

FAN MODE — FAN SYMBOL
FAN mode circulates indoor air without operating the heating or cooling cycle.

AUTO FAN SPEED
With HEAT selected, AUTO fan allows the system to adjust the indoor airflow. It may move more air during warm-up, then slow as the home approaches the set point.
We generally recommend AUTO fan for split and ducted systems, zoned or not.

MANUAL FAN SPEEDS
Low fan is quieter but distributes warmth more slowly. Medium or high fan provides greater air throw and may suit larger spaces or initial warm-up.

TEMPERATURE SETTING
A practical occupied setting is 20–22°C.

Setting the controller to 28°C does not normally heat the room faster. It raises the target temperature and may make the system run longer.

AIR DIRECTION
For a wall split, use the controller to direct warm air down and into the room. Warm air rises, so aiming too high can leave more heat near the ceiling.

Do not move the louvres by hand; most are motorised and should be adjusted using the controller.

For ducted systems with adjustable outlets, direct the air downwards and away from beds or seating areas to reduce draughts.

SYMBOLS
Symbols and terminology vary between controllers. Refer to the operating guide if your display looks different. Common symbols are shown in the graphic.
