Electrifying Your Home Starts with Heating!

Heating is often your home’s biggest winter energy load — and the best place to start getting off gas.

Modern reverse-cycle systems are over 300% efficient, meaning every kW of electricity can deliver 3+ kW of heat. Compare that to gas heaters at around 80–90% efficiency.

With the increasing cost of Gas, many Canberra home owners are upgrading their old gas heaters and replacing them with highly efficient reverse cycle Air Conditioning systems.

✅ Pair your heating with rooftop solar and you’ll drastically cut winter energy spend.

✅ Upgrading your Domestic Hot Water (DHW) from Gas to Electric is also very important. DHW is the 2nd highest energy consuming appliance in the average Canberra home. Heat pump hot water with Eco mode, and smart scheduling functionality, can significantly improve the efficiency, and minimise your power bill.

Dawson Heating & Cooling can connect you with trusted solar and hot water providers to complete your efficient all-electric home.

Clean Filters = Lower Bills and Better Comfort
Dirty filters make your system work harder — especially in winter — leading to:

• Longer warm-up times
• More frequent defrost cycles
• Higher electricity bills

If your filters are dirty, the airflow will be significantly reduced and your Air Conditioner will be running at a reduced capacity.
This means you won't have the heat you need, at the times you need it most.

🧼 Clean your filters every 4 weeks during periods of heavy use, especially through winter when the system is likely operating 90% of the time.

🧽 During shoulder periods or when the system is only operating intermittently, filter cleaning may only be required every 2-3 months.

🤔 How to know when the filter needs cleaning?
If your filter has a light covering of dust, then that's ok and to be expected after a couple of weeks of operation. If you hold the filter up to a light (or the sun) and you can't see through it, then air will also be significantly reduced. This would be considered extremely dirty and should be avoided.

💦 How to clean your filters?
Please remember to turn the system OFF prior to removing filters. Once the filters are removed gently vacuum them on both sides, starting with the dirty side to suck the dirt off the filter media. Alternatively use a garden hose on low pressure, and gently hose down the filters starting on the clean side to push the dirt out of the filter media.

🍃 Once clean, the filter should be left to dry in the shade outside, before re-installing into the system.

🛠️ Don’t wait until something breaks — schedule preventative maintenance each year to keep your system operating efficiently.

Dawson Heating & Cooling offers Quarterly, 6 monthly or Annual maintenance options — whether you’re preparing for winter or simply keeping your system in top shape.

Use Smart Zoning on ducted Air Conditioning system to reduce wasted heat.
HEAT your home where you need it, WHEN you need it!

Modern zoning systems like MyAir allow precise control of which rooms you heat and what temperature you heat them — right from your smartphone.

This means you can lower the temperature or turn off unused rooms, reduce energy use, and stay comfortable where it matters most.

Most reputable A/C contractors can tailor a zoning system to suit your needs, with performance and long-term comfort levels in mind.

Many 3rd party zoning brands are available to zone your new or existing ducted air conditioner, all of which will providing similar functionality.

At Dawson Heating & Cooling, we have been installing the brand MyAir for over 7 years. It has proven to be a reliable and intuitive system for hundreds of Canberra homeowners. We receive great feedback primarily due to its excellent temperature management features, as well as its easy touch screen operation and smart phone integration.

Get in touch with our team for advice on how you can improve your home comfort with zoning.

🏡 Day 4 – Winter Warmth Week.

Every Home is Different: Seal It, Insulate It and Stay Warm
Not all homes are created equal — and neither are their heating needs. Whether you're in a modern build or a classic Canberra cottage, improving your home's thermal envelope can make a significant difference in comfort and energy bills.

🔍 Key Areas to Improve:

Insulation:
Good quality insulation in walls, ceilings, and floors can reduce heat loss by up to 45%, leading to substantial energy savings.

Draught-Proofing:
Sealing gaps around windows, doors, and other openings can prevent up to 25% of heat loss, enhancing comfort and reducing energy costs.

Window Upgrades:
Replacing single-glazed windows with double or triple glazing can reduce heat loss by up to 30%, improving indoor comfort and lowering heating demands.

Thermal Curtains:
Installing curtains, blinds or shutters can further insulate windows, keeping the valuable warm air inside during frosty nights.

Floor Coverings:
Using rugs or carpet on bare floors can help retain heat and add comfort underfoot.

Vent Covers:
If you have an evaporative cooler installed for use in the summer months, you need to close or seal these vents during winter. Valuable heat escapes through the cooler on the roof when the hot air rises and finds its way out through the vents. Installing Heatsaver Vent Covers will completely eliminate this heat-loss.

💡 Tip:
Every improvement helps. Even simple DIY measures, like applying weatherstrips or using door snakes, can make a noticeable difference in reducing drafts and maintaining a consistent indoor temperature.

Dawson Heating & Cooling is here to help you identify the best solutions tailored to your home's unique needs.

Winter Warmth Week - Day 3

🧊 Understanding the Defrost Cycle (and why it’s not a fault)

During freezing Canberra mornings, your reverse-cycle air conditioner may pause and blow cool air—this is a normal part of its operation.

What’s Happening?
Your system is entering a defrost cycle to clear frost from the outdoor coil, ensuring it continues to run efficiently.

During this defrost cycle:

❄️ The fans may stop.

❄️ The compressor continues to operate to melt the ice.

❄️ You might hear unusual sounds like gurgling or whooshing—these are normal as the refrigerant flow reverses.

Water Leakage:

💧 As the ice melts, water may drip from the outdoor unit. This is expected.

💧 Be aware as this water can turn to ice on the ground and create a slip hazard:

Optimising Performance

🌞 Sunlight Exposure: Positioning the outdoor unit where it receives morning sun can reduce defrost frequency.

💨 Airflow Clearance: Keep the area around the unit free from obstructions like fences or plants. If space is limited, consider installing an air deflection kit to direct airflow appropriately.

When to Seek Service

🔧 If the system becomes excessively noisy or doesn't operate as it used to, it might be time to schedule a service. We recommend annnual maintenance to ensure optimum performance.

Winter Warmth Week - Day 2

Do you have solar panels on your home?
Then don’t let your home get icy cold while you’re out.

☀️ Why not harness that free energy from the sun by converting it into heat?

Maintaining a reasonable comfort level during the day (when energy is potentially free) helps reduce your heating demand at night.
We recommend leaving your air conditioner set to 22°C or higher during daylight / solar-producing hours.

🔋 If you have a solar battery, some of your night-time heating can be offset too.
Once the sun sets, the battery takes over — and only when it runs low will you draw from the grid.

🌡️ If you don’t have solar, we still recommend leaving your air conditioning system at a lower setback temperature (17–18°C) while you're out.
Reverse-cycle systems in well-insulated homes use less energy maintaining steady warmth than reheating from scratch.

💡 Results vary depending on weather, solar system size, battery capacity, and home insulation.

❄️ Canberra mornings are brutal — but resist the urge to crank your air conditioner up to 28–30°C!

Your system won’t heat faster, just harder. It may even trigger a defrost cycle when you need heat most.

✅ Set your system to 21–22°C and allow your home to warm gradually.

✅ Close off unused rooms or unconditioned spaces.

✅ Keep blinds and shutters closed to help keep the warm air in, and the cold air out.

✅ Use the inbuilt schedule function to ensure your home is warm by the time you wake up.

🏠
During winter, the system will often need to be programmed to have the temperature increased several hours prior to needing it.

Remember, the energy it takes to heat a cold home on a freezing morning is significant. Leaving the system 'ON' or keeping zones at a reduced temperature (known as a night-time setback), can significantly improve the morning comfort levels.

This method allows the system to operate on a low compressor speed throughout the night, whilst still maintaining a moderate temperature within the home and its contents.

A common setback temperature is 18-19°C, therefore your system only needs to increase the temperature by 2 or 3°C at a time in the morning when it is least efficient.

Note: A well-insulated home will maintain this heat for longer. This will provide a significantly lower energy consumption compared to a poorly insulated and drafty home.

⚠️Avoid frozen pipes on your Evaporative Cooler during winter❄️

Follow the easy steps in this video , to help you isolate the water supply to your evaporative cooler. This should be done prior to winter every year.

The water in the plumbing lines if not drained, will freeze and potentially burst the pipes or damage the system components. Either way this can be inconvenient and costly.

It can all be avoided with this simple process of isolating and draining the system.
