The Case for Measuring Bed-Levels Inside the Thickener

In solid-liquid separation, settling solids form four distinct zones within a thickener. Each zone serves a specific function, and maintaining adequate heights is crucial for steady-state operation.

Monitoring these transition zones can help determine:

✅ The effectiveness of Flocculant Dosing (by tracking the Interface)
✅ Whether there is sufficient bed height for achieving the Target Underflow Density (by tracking Mud & Interface)
✅ Early warning signs before process upsets (abrupt changes in bed-levels)

SmartDiver® Rake Integration: Avoiding Collisions with Continuous Rake Monitoring

In Auto Mode, the SmartDiver synchronises its dive cycles with the rake arm rotation using a proximity tag-and-switch system mounted on the rake drive. When a rake arm passes the dive position, it triggers a signal that the SmartDiver uses to calculate a safe window before descending.

The system also handles both single-direction and bi-directional rake arms. For bi-directional rakes, directional pulse sequencing distinguishes forward from reverse rotation, ensuring the timing logic works correctly regardless of rake direction.

The safety net: If the rake changes speed or direction, which impacts the safe window, the system will not initiate a dive.

With continuous rake monitoring, the system can operate safely and automatically, and provide real-time bed-level measurements for thickener control.

Definitive Flocculant Dosing using Interface & Mud Level Measurements.

The distance between Interface and Mud Level—the Settling Zone—correlates directly with flocculant effectiveness.

In the Settling Zone of a Thickener, solids settle under gravity, concentration increases with depth and settling rates progressively slow. Flocculants enhance particle aggregation in this zone, and the height of the zone indicates dosing efficiency:

Contracting Zone (interface approaching mud) → Faster settling → Reduce flocculant
Expanding Zone (increasing separation) → Slower settling → Increase flocculant

With SmartDiver® data, differential control using interface-mud separation provides a more data-driven approach towards flocculant dosage.
