This is a birdcage scaffold built for canopy works at Federation Square, the final stages of delivering the Metro Tunnel works, located in the heart of Melbourne. A birdcage is built up to provide continuous working decks across the entire area at height, so the crews working the canopy above have a solid platform under every part of it rather than chasing access from the edges.

The birdcage is built to hold a clear internal passage roughly 2.4 metres wide and 2.5 metres high straight through the middle. Two stretcher stairs give proper access up to the top deck, and a Kwikstage mobile scaffold sits up top to reach the spots a fixed deck cannot.

Our team carried out crack injection works to stop water ingress through a concrete structure, sealing the pathways where water was tracking through the element rather than treating the staining left behind on the face. Zac and the team set out the injection ports across the affected area and pumped resin under pressure to fill the voids and cracks from the inside, so the seal forms within the depth of the concrete instead of on the surface.

Getting the port spacing and injection sequence right determines whether the resin travels through the full crack network or stops short. Sealing the ingress at the source protects the reinforcement from ongoing exposure and keeps water off finishes, services and adjacent trades further into the program.

The works ran under an approved inspection and test plan with hold and witness points signed off progressively by our supervision and the client representative.

SIS recently partnered with Hickory to deliver a scaffolding workshop for their graduates and cadets, giving the next generation of construction professionals valuable exposure to the discipline and the standards that sit behind it.

The session began with a presentation covering the fundamentals of scaffolding, from system selection through to the compliance requirements that govern safe access on any site. From there the group moved into a site walkthrough, where the theory took shape in a live environment and the detail became something the attendees could see, question and understand in context.

General Manager Douglas and OH&S Manager Wiese were both on hand throughout the morning, sharing the practical knowledge that only comes from years on the tools and across the industry. Investing in graduates and cadets is investing in the future of the trade. Sessions like this give them the grounding to understand not only how scaffold is designed and built, but how it is applied on a live site and as a whole, from office to site and from drawing to live build.

Another significant scaffold package has landed on the books, this time at Westfield Southland in partnership with Hanlon Industries.

The package encompasses the design, supply, installation and dismantling of tube and fitting access scaffold for both inbound and outbound zones, facilitating the installation of digital signage. Provisions include ladder access to hop up working platforms, full perimeter containment via scaffold guard sheeting, and hoarding panels fixed to the base of the scaffold to seal off voids above active roadway zones below.

Data centres are one of the sectors driving construction demand in Australia right now. This is yet another data centre project that has officially topped out, with our perimeter scaffold cycling alongside it from the ground up.

This is an internal stair access tower delivered inside an architectural feature structure, providing safe access for the principal contractor's program of works. The position and geometry of the tower were coordinated against the surrounding structural and architectural elements before er****on began. Clearances were maintained throughout the build.

Working inside feature architecture is where engineered scaffold design earns its description. The result has to be safe, compliant and stable. It also has to leave the host structure exactly as it was found. Both outcomes are non negotiable and both are designed from the outset.

We attending the Youth Industry Immersion Program which was a reminder that most people don’t end up in this industry by accident.

Our GM Ian joined the program run by the Building and Construction Foundation, a registered organisation working to make construction reachable for young people who might never find a way in otherwise.

For someone who finished school with no clear idea of what came next, sitting alongside young people at the start of that same stretch was a chance to point them towards something.

We are proud to be working alongside Hickory once again, this time on 570 Little Bourke Street in the heart of Melbourne's CBD. A $300 million purpose built student accommodation tower rising 26 levels and delivering 892 beds, this is one of the largest student housing developments to commence in the city in recent years.

SIS is providing access scaffolding for this project, giving trades safe and reliable access to the structure as it progresses. It is a substantial scope on a demanding inner city site, and one our team is well equipped to deliver.
